I can tell you that this show is one of the most spectacularly produced and well written pieces of entertainment I've ever been fortunate enough to be involved in.
David Goyer, Starz and BBC are letting me write big, bold melodies for live orchestra. I'm developing a dozen of character themes, right from the first episode, and planning out musical arcs for multiple seasons in advance.
This is going to be a fun one, you guys!

STORY LINE:
Disgusted by society’s glorification of violence and repression of sexuality, radical female activists LIV and WITH begin a grass roots campaign to “Free the Nipple” and make public nudity legal in all 50 states — a mission that concludes with a triumphant nude rally outside the Lincoln Memorial.
Girlrillaz (originally titled Saranopolis) falls into a Borat -type category. Scripted, yet sprinkled with interviews and file footage, this film takes on sex, feminism, and censorship within film and television. The crew is predominantly female and they are currently in pre-production research with a plan to start filming in Los Angeles and Brooklyn in August 2012.
The producers are excitedly prepping their upcoming shooting schedule from an office on Hollywood Blvd with an amazing view of the Hollywood Hills.

Emily Browning and Xavier Samuel - Aussies hang out on screen and off

HAS on-screen chemistry once again morphed into real-life romance for Aussie actors-on-a-roll Emily Browning and Xavier Samuel? That's the theory being floated about the co-stars, who are currently working on new sexually charged indie thriller Plush in LA.
Playing up-and-coming rockstars who fall into a downward spiral, the pair were this week seen out together buying CDs at legendary music giant Amoeba on Sunset Boulevard.
And they looked pretty happy together from where Confidential was sitting.
Browning, 23, best known for her roles in Sucker Punch and Sleeping Beauty, broke up with her British boyfriend Max Irons (son of the actor Jeremy Irons) earlier this year. Adelaide's Samuel, 28 - best known for his work on Twilight: Eclipse and A Few Best Men - was last linked to former Miss Europe pageant contestant Shermine Shahrivar.
In Plush - directed by Little Red Riding Hood's Catherine Hardwicke - Browning portrays a singer who loses her bandmate and brother to a drug overdose. She seeks solace in the replacement guitarist (Samuel) however after an affair, his dark past starts to come through. American "it" actor Cam Gigandet (of Easy A and Trespass fame).

Labyrinth comes to TV!
It’s difficult to ‘give up’ your novel to others to bring to the screen; having spent months working to get the story perfect you don’t want it distorted by someone else’s ‘vision’. I know now why my friend and fellow author Ian Rankin has not watched any of the ‘Rebus’ TV series, as he knows the stories will not develop on screen as he created them on paper: but I am happy to report that my female heroes, the purpose of the grail quest and the time-slip structure of Labyrinth have all been retained and sympathetically recreated. There are changes, too, but I think anyone who loves the novel will be—like me—delighted with the result.
If you haven’t read Labyrinth yet (maybe now’s the time to grab a copy so you can create it in your head before you see it on TV), the plot runs concurrently in two time periods, modern-day France where the main character is PhD graduate archaeologist Alice Tanner, and 13th-century Carcassonne, where the intelligent headstrong heroine is 17-year-old Alaïs Pelletier. Their lives become intertwined across the centuries, united by a grail quest, a common destiny and a recurring motif — the symbol of the labyrinth. I love writing strong, courageous women, who carry the plot—as you will know if you have read Citadel—and the adaptation keeps them firmly at the heart of the story.
Labyrinth has been partly filmed in Cape Town, South Africa (where they built a replica of the medieval city complete with working forge and market – astonishing) and in Carcassonne and the Languedoc itself. My two female heroines are perfectly cast: Vanessa Kirby (Great Expectations, The Hour) plays Alice, and Jessica Brown Findlay (Sybil in Downton Abbey) plays 13th-century Alaïs, with Sebastian Stan as Will and Emun Elliot as Alaïs’s husband, Guilhem. The production is executive produced by Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free, in association with Tandem Communications (Germany) – responsible for the excellent adaptations of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth – as well as Film Afrika Worldwide (South Africa), and in association with Universal Production Partners (Czech Republic). The Oscar-nominated Adrian Hodges (who adapted My Week with Marilyn for the screen) wrote the screenplay and always kept me involved – he asked lots of thoughtful questions about my characters throughout the adaptation process and, in some cases, the changes he’s made I think improve on the original.
It’s also wonderful to have Janet Suzman and John Hurt playing two of the lynchpin characters. Janet is Esciarmonde and John plays Audric Baillard. When I was on set in Carcassonne and heard him speak his first lines as Audric—with the Château Comtal in the background—it was a spine tingling moment. He was superb. When I returned to my desk to work on Citadel, I realised that so completely and elegantly had he inhabited the character, that Audric’s characteristics and mannerisms had become fixed as those of John Hurt. From page to screen and back again, a strange case of art influencing life influencing art…
And I have a small walk-on part myself. I’m the tour guide in a modern-day Montségur scene – blink and you’ll miss me! But obviously a ‘best newcomer’ nomination awaits. My thin shirt was little match for the tramontana that was blowing across the mountain on that cold October day (the scene was meant to BE a scorching July afternoon), but it didn’t matter. It was a wonderful experience to be filming my story in the heart of Cathar country. And when the director said ‘that’s a wrap for Kate’, it was the most extraordinary feeling to have been allowed to be a tiny part of it. Nearly twenty years after first setting foot inside the ruins of Montségur, I finally came face to face with ‘my’ Alice standing in the same place. Wonderful!
We are still waiting for an on-air date, but it will be sometime in spring 2013, and will be a big Sunday night/Monday night broadcast. It is Channel 4 in the UK, Sat1 in Germany, M6 in France, Cuatro in Spain, and ORF in Austria and we’ll be posting information about the other broadcast partners as soon as we have firm dates. I can’t wait!

Michael Connelly talks about 20 years of writing crime fiction

Connelly was relaxing before a Thanksgiving gathering with family and resting from a weeklong trip to Turkey, Kuwait and other countries as part of a USO tour of military bases. The experience was inspiring and gave him fresh insight into character, a quality that's all-important in his books.
Harry Bosch, the persistent, brooding Los Angeles police detective, has been the main character in 18 of Connelly's novels since his debut in "The Black Echo" in 1992. Connelly's created other leads -- defense attorney Mickey Haller, reporter Jack McEvoy, FBI agent Rachel Walling, ex-con Cassie Black, serial killer hunter Terry McCaleb -- and moved them through Los Angeles over two decades of sustained creativity.
"The Black Box," a new novel featuring Bosch that flashes from a recent case to the riots of 1992, is the occasion for a tour that brings Connelly to Powell's in Beaverton on Friday. The author spoke from Sarasota, Fla. Questions and answers have been edited for brevity and clarity.
What's going on with the Harry Bosch TV series?
Things could happen within days. Over the summer I signed partnerships with a production company and a show runner, a writer, Eric Overmyer, who wrote the first episode of the Harry Bosch television show. We went through a couple drafts on it, it's in good shape, I really like it, and it went out to studios and networks on Friday ... I think certainly by next week we'll know what the town's interest is in turning Harry Bosch in a television show.
Are you thinking HBO or network or what?
We're definitely gearing this toward cable sensibilities. We're not even sending it to networks. We're talking about a 10 to 12 episode season that tracks one or two books. Our idea for the first season is to track "City of Bones" and part of "Concrete Blonde." "Concrete Blonde" has a courtroom drama playing out as a B track in it, and we're taking that B track and adding it to "City of Bones." Definitely something like HBO, AMC, something like that.
I'm personally very intrigued by what Netflix is doing, so they'll get it as well. I think, and other people think, it's possibly the way television is going. They have a show coming out in February called "House of Cards" and rather than put it out episodically they're going to put all 12 episodes on Netflix so you can watch it whenever you want. You can watch in a binge, all in one day, or whenever you want. To me, that's interesting because it matches my own taste in television.
You've been very protective of the Bosch character.
At the same time I've been very protective I've learned as I go along, and in these initial stages it's about trusting who you give the stuff to. It's what happened on "The Lincoln Lawyer" (movie) and that worked out pretty well. I think I'm moving cautiously but I think I'm moving in the right direction. I was also in a good position where I don't have to make any deals. There were times in my life I took Hollywood deals to finance my writing. I'm not in that situation any more so I had some approvals.
I wouldn't make a deal without certain approvals. People in Hollywood would say there's no way you can get those approvals and I'd say fine, then there's no way you can have Harry Bosch ... Harry Bosch, he is L.A. So you cannot shoot it in Vancouver. I would not make a deal unless it was contractually agreed-to that every shot would be filmed in Los Angeles. That was a no-brainer from the aspect of these stories and this character but in Hollywood that was not a no-brainer. It was a hard-fought battle but I got it. I have script approval and so forth.
When you started out you surely weren't thinking about TV deals and script approvals.
It's been a whole 20-year process. My first book came out 20 years ago and I often use this description: getting into publishing when I was living in Los Angeles and I knew nothing about this world which is 80 percent set in New York, it felt like I was in a dark room with a flashlight that the batteries were dying. You could barely see a small part of the picture. You learn as you go. The main thing is I always should be able to keep my head down and write and all these business aspects and Hollywood can certainly be a distraction but they can be controlled and should not affect the writing process. That's the biggest challenge I face: to find the time to focus on the books and make sure they are not going down in quality or anything like that. If I'm assured of that I can stick my head up and have a Hollywood meeting or something like that.
Do you think you've improved as a writer even as you've gotten more and more successful?
I hope so and I think so. I made some changes in my life over the 20 years that have helped to ensure that. Moving from Los Angeles I think helped make me more creative in writing about Los Angeles because I'm writing about it from afar. I think it re-upped my dedication to being accurate about that place. I think those things came together and I think I've also shifted over the 20 years to what's important, and that's these books and the character, exploring character rather than starting out with a plot as an initiation point ... I think that's just a good way to be.
What about stylistically? Do you feel like you're stripping down, or do you just know what you're doing better than you did?
I think, and this borders on the edge of egomania, but I think I know what I'm doing better with each book. You used that phrase stripping down which is a phrase that's in my mind a lot when I write. This long 20-year journey has led me to a point where the Keep It Simple, Stupid idea of writing is the best way to keep momentum going in a way, and that goes whether you're writing it or reading it.
This book kind of spans a 20-year story and I had to go back and look at some of the earlier books and what I'd written and reference the riots and so forth and I just found there were too many words in those books. I'm using less words now, I guess.
Do you do a blueprint for the series looking ahead or do you write one book and then another?
You can't help but think about where the story is going in general terms, especially with a character like Harry Bosch, who ages in real time. I'm doing one book at a time but I'm also aware that this life he has with a badge and a gun is coming to an end pretty soon. That infiltrates the book I'm writing but I'm always just writing one book at a time. I'm writing a book right now for next year and after that I have no idea what I'm writing.
I'm really concentrating on writing a lot about Harry Bosch the last few years because I know the time for him as a cop is limited and I wanted to make the best use of it ... Very soon I'm going to have to come out, or I'm going to want to come out with a new character. What that character is, whether it's a cop or a lawyer or a jazz man or a fisherman, I have no idea.
If you thought it was time, would you kill Bosch and not look back?
I could do it and not look back. I don't think I will. This is the one place where reader response does intrude a little bit in my thinking. I try very hard not to have that happen, to just kind of write for myself, but with social media and the ways to receive feedback on what you're doing, there's a lot of people who have a connection to Harry Bosch because of his dogged desire to keep moving forward despite all the obstacles in his life. I'm the one who's throwing those obstacles and I do feel that Harry's heading toward something and it would be pretty awful of me to rob him of that with a bullet. It would have a great deal of shock value, obviously, but sitting back and thinking about it after the shock would lead to upset. This guy's been on a tough journey and you hope it pays off for him.
The whole series is like a tunnel. There's a lot of metaphoric references to darkness and light and lost lights etc., etc. I'm hoping that at the end of the tunnel there's light and that he finds some kind of ultimate understanding and fulfillment. I think that would be a better way to end the journey that with a sudden death or even with his own hands.

Ex-Miss Colombia again breaks all rules, goes nude
For the second time, ex-Miss Colombia Michelle Rouillard decided to ignore protocol and do exactly what she's not supposed to do: pose nude in a magazine.
The 26-year-old beauty from Popayan will be appearing in the December edition of magazine Cromos, according to the television network Caracol that gladly showed some behind-the scenes shots of the beauty queen painted as if she were wearing a bikini.
Rouillard broke the Miss Colombia protocol that prohibits elected and candidate misses to pose nude before when she was posing without clothes and paint in another magazine, Soho.

Chongqing sex tape scandal linked to Wang Lijun

A scandal involving a sex video that has already sacked a Chongqing district official was said to be linked to jailed former police chief Wang Lijun, Xinhua reported on Sunday.
Chongqing district party chief Lei Zhengfu was sacked on Friday after photos were uploaded online showing him having sex with a young mistress. Citizen journalist Zhu Ruifeng, who first posted shots from the video, said the footage was recorded in early 2007, and Wang, police chief of Chongqing at the time, acknowledged the scandal back then.
Wang was sentenced to 15 years in jail in September, for defection, abuse of power and receiving bribes. Wang’s case exposed China’s worst political scandal in a decade, leading to the downfall of Bo Xilai, former Chongqing party secretary.
Quoting an unidentified informant within the Chongqing police bureau, Zhu said that the young woman in the video, surnamed Zhao, was one of many who were trained by the head of a construction company to be “given” to officials as bribes.
Zhu claimed that “the construction builder ‘gave’ Zhao to Lei” in early 2007. The builder had Zhao secretly recorded the sex tape and used it to blackmail Lei, prompting Lei to report it to a Chongqing “senior official”. This was followed by Wang Lijun’s order to detain Zhao for thirty days and jail the builder for a year.
Zhu said he could back his claims with police records given to him by the anonymous source. He said he has a record of the police’s interrogation of the builder.
Zhu also claimed he had sex tapes of six officials, “four of them are incumbent officials”.
Meanwhile, the party’s discipline inspection authority accused Lei for keeping mistresses and helping his brother win government contracts. But Zhu told dfdaily that “Lei Zhengfu is also involved with other graft activities, I hope Chongqing authority can have a thorough investigation on it.”
Bo, currently in custody and under investigation over corruption allegations, was also accused of keeping mistresses.
