Fifty Shades of Grey Starts Filming

Everyone and their mother – perhaps most upsettingly, especially the mothers – has been anticipating the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Well, anticipate no longer, for it is at least partially a reality.

Producer Dana Brunetti Tweeted a picture of a film slate from the set Sunday with the caption, "Here we go." Sadly, the slate was notably devoid of leather, lace, or a ball-gag, but did feature the E L James series's tasteful feather motif.

It shouldn't come as news to anyone that Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are playing the film's leads, though it may surprise you to learn that Melanie Griffith is "thrilled" about her daughter playing an ingénue being slowly drawn into the world of S-and-M.

Although the original Christian Grey actor, Charlie Hunnam, dropped out of the film, causing an uproar, pictures of Dornan like these seem to have mitigated any further fallout. 

* It would be nice if Dakota kept an online diary describing the day/daily shot to whet fans appetite. Doesn't need to be specific.

"Can't believe I was naked in front of the crew. It was my first time. Thank God my mom was there to offer support and encouragement"
"Must lose more weight. Skipping lunch and smoking half a pack. Need to look sexy. At the moment feel fat"

Sorry to comment on an older post. It sounds like they are going to go ahead and shoot a more explicit version, either for NC-17 theater release (so they can double-dip at the box office with horny housewives) and/or an unrated director's cut DVD. Can you speculate on the kinds of nudity and sexual interaction that could be filmed for the explicit version that wouldn't be allowed in the Hard-R version? Are we talking about just more aggressive thrusting during simulated sex? Male full frontal? Cunnilingus (it seems that apparently gets you an NC-17 rating these days)? Wondering if this is anything to get excited about or if this is just going to be lame and tame from a nudity/sex perspective. Would be exciting to get some actual hand-to-genital contact on film, maybe a little labia or something. But I suspect that's wishful thinking. Would love your thoughts.

I wouldn't put much stock on Dana Brunetti @ Kevin Spacey 'guy' with his R-rated and NC-17 crap. He's the archetype modern producer. Old boys never compromised in making sure the final product is on the same unwavering path while you build everything around it. But new breeds like Dana is all about accommodating everyone and molly canoodling the actors even if it eventually compromises the quality of the flick. That's one of the reason why many of his produced films stays in PG-13 realm. Easier to control than a R-rated production where risks are required and creative control constantly changing hands via discussions, someone objects to the way the particular scene going to be shot, etc. Dakota is his 'girl'. When all other first-choice turned down the role, Dana had no choice but turn to an actress he worked with in The Social Network. So it's his job to protect her from being exploited on the set. Like I said before, Dana and E.L. James going to be at loggerheads soon.

We are still not certain if it's going to be first-person narrative like in the book. If it was, the only nudity we can expect is from Dakota. Breasts, Butt and Bush. Third-person narration would be a game changer. You can 'liberalize' the material from the claustrophobic confines of the original which is something I'm sure the director Sam Taylor-Johnson prefers. Again without the script, it's all conjecture on my part. If it's indeed multi narrative, you can be certain they will expound Kate character (Eloise Mumford) and she would be a nudity alternative to Anastasia. Sure wish I had the casting notice to ascertain if Kate and Mia Grey (Rita Ora) requires nudity. 

As for nudity if NC-17 version was actually filmed, you got it right Spyral. We can expect lengthy unedited humping scenes between the S-and-M couple. Full-frontal by Jamie but no erection. Close-ups could be with a prosthetic. No way Dakota going to play with a dick - fake or not. Maybe they go with a BD and the shot is from behind Anastasia to cover the fact. Same with BJ. Cunnilingus would be easier for Dakota to simulate. Remember Ivana in Banshee? NC-17 should have Dakota in full-frontal for longer period. The bath tub segment should prove interesting. We will be treated to heavier aspect of S-and-M that is likely excised from the R-rating. Spanking and domination. 

I'm also worried with Dakota drastic weight loss. I wouldn't be surprised if the main filming crew feels the same way. Sure she wants to look good naked but we have seen actresses go overboard to the point of emaciation.

Spyral, I requested the help of an experienced EP (Executive Producer) to offer his take on the movie. I'm woefully out of touch with some of the current situation in Hollywood and often felt like I'm talking out my ass. I was lucky enough to be contacted by the EP last month via an article I posted about an actress suing producers of Femme Fatales for coercing her into performing sex and nude scene. He agreed to assist - if time permits - in rectifying certain assumptions and providing his own input in the matter.

To be clear, I haven't read the book so I'm not as familiar with the material. 

My feelings are that they aren't necessarily shooting it to be two versions ie shooting it with the intention of making two versions, but rather, making a film they feel strongly as scripted will give them an NC-17 version. 

The MPAA - we all know - is not predictable or consistent but I'm guessing they've analyzed the material in the script they intend to shoot to be something that will land them an NC-17 rating with the MPAA. They also know the core fanbase that would flood theaters to see the film will want to see a film that is faithful to the book or at least the spirit of it. 

(Its funny to see the outrage already sparking over what people are supposed to be wearing in certain scenes and how what they are doing on set isn't close enough). 

So its likely that the producers/director are making an NC-17 film which they intend to do whatever the MPAA asks to get it cut down to an R so that it can secure a wide release, knowing full well a directors' cut will be released with the original cut. 

The point being the mentality isn't to make a regular version and then a more extreme version. The mentality is to make a faithful version (or their idea of a faithful version) and a more tame, MPAA guided version, which they don't know what it will look like at the moment. They will have to wait and see what the MPAA objects to in their own version.

Also, regarding actor restrictions, don't be surprised if the actors who signed on are willing to do a LOT of stuff. I don't believe anything (aside from real sex) is off the table. None of the actors cast are bigger than the book and I don't believe anyone who was uptight about any of the material would be accepted into the production. I'm sure they were all made aware of the fact that this could be an NC-17 or unrated film and there are not going to be any negotiations from the production team to appease the cast. 

ANY cuts made to the film will be for a business decision. R rating means more theaters means more ticket sales. That will be their only motivation, but they also know the core fanbase wants a faithful adaptation and that means releasing the version of the film they currently have scripted which they think is the best version of the film. This will be what they submit to the MPAA, and which will receive an NC-17...from that they will cut it down to make it R, but release that version later.

Speaking from no actual authority or inside knowledge (though I'm sure I can get a hold of the script) my guess is they are going to expand the narrative but keep the storyline faithful. I can't imagine anyone making a big budget production limiting the perspective to one person. 

If I get ahold of the script, I'll let you know.

According to Star, the film’s producers decided to show off Jamie’s, ahem, assets once they realized that fans wanted the movie to be just as X-rated as the book that inspired it.

“Fifty Shades of Grey producers know they have to make the screen version just as steamy as the novel to make it a success,” a source told the mag. “They can’t turn it into a Disney movie.”
Not if they want to sell any tickets, at least.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Will Release Two Version

If the thought of Jamie Dornan’s member makes you uncomfortable, you can breathe a sigh of relief — Fifty producer Dana Brunetti says that the studio will release two versions of the film to satiate a wider range of fans.
“We could release the R-rated version, which everyone will enjoy, and then for those fans who want to get a little gritty we could release an NC-17 version a few weeks later,” Dana explained. FYI, we’re guessing Jamie’s goodies will be making their appearance in the latter.
