“Vampire Academy” star Zoey Deutch has landed the female lead role in “Midnight Rider,” the indie biopic of Allman Brothers Band leader Gregg Allman, according to The Wrap. Tyson Ritter, Wyatt Russell and William Hurt are also part of the cast.Randall Miller is directing the drama featuring Ritter as Allman and the film will chronicle two major points in the singer’s life and career: the first formation of the Allman Brothers Band, and later, the band’s explosion onto the music scene and Allman’s struggle to clean up his drug and alcohol abuse. Deutch is lining up the role of Mae, a small town girl turned Allman Brothers Band groupie who becomes Gregg’s love interest in the early days of the band. “Zoey’s freshness and intensity blows me away. She is both young and wise. I can’t wait to work with her,” Miller tells the trade.
Filming begins next month.
Deutch was a regular on short-lived CW series “Ringer,” where she played Sarah Michelle Gellar’s stepdaughter, and had a bit role in YA adaptation “Beautiful Creatures,” but clearly it’s “Vampire Academy” which will hopefully serve as her launching pad. She plays Rose Hathaway, the snarky and bubbly half-vampire lead in the film which actually looks pretty entertaining. It comes out on February 7th.
* Hmmm....seems like there's going to be plenty of changes in the adaptation from the book to the script, sugarcoating it and making it palatable for the Greg (band) fans. Focusing on a single groupie-cum-love interest (assuming Zoey is the lead) suggest the others and Cher will only receive a brief nod in montage scenes. Still hopeful the flick would introduce Zoey's boobies to the world. Lea was 21 when she did that wonderful nude scene in All the Right Moves. Zoey is 20 and could better her mom's in MR.
