Eliza Dushku, Bradley Whitford, Joel David Moore Join Gregg Allman Biopic
Eliza Dushku, Bradley Whitford and Joel David Moore have signed on for the Gregg Allman biopic “Midnight Rider.”The Exchange is selling international rights in Berlin. Shooting is expected to start Feb. 24 in Savannah, Ga.
Tyson Ritter, the lead singer/songwriter of the All American Rejects, has already been cast as a young Allman. Wyatt Russell will play his brother Duane Allman. William Hurt will play the present-day version of Allman and Zooey Deutch (“Vampire Academy”) will play a groupie.
The film is based on Gregg Allman’s biography “My Cross To Bear,” written with Alan Light.
Unclaimed Freight Productions’ Randall Miller and Jody Savin are producing, with Miller directing from a screenplay he wrote with Savin.
Producers are planning to include original Allman Brothers tracks in the film, along with re-recorded performances by the actor/musicians.
“Midnight Rider” was one of the band’s first successful songs. Gregg Allman struggled with drugs throughout much of his life before becoming sober in the mid-1990s and continues to perform at the age of 65. Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971.
Dushku will play a small town Southern girl who inspires the song “Whipping Post.” Whitford will play Allman’s current manager Michael Lehman and Moore will play manager Bill McEuen, who discovered the brothers and brought them to Los Angeles.
Exec producers include Allman, Lehman, Don Mandrik of Georgia Production Finance, Nick Gant of Meddin and Jim Tharpe of Roadmap Films.
