Ivana Milicevic Talks Cinemax’s BANSHEE, Her Favorite Episodes, Graphic Sex Scenes, Playing Two Sides of Her Character, and More

by

The Cinemax action series Banshee tells the story of Lucas Hood (Antony Starr), an ex-con and master thief who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, PA.  It’s the perfect cover for him to try to win back the love of his life (Ivana Milicevic) and hide out from the dangerous gangster (Ben Cross) that they both betrayed years earlier, while attempting not to get into too much more trouble.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, actress Ivana Milicevic talked about how she got involved with this show, how much she enjoys getting to play the two sides of her character, what it’s like doing the fairly graphic but always story-driven sex scenes, working with co-stars Antony Starr and Rus Blackwell, what’s to come for her character, and her favorite episodes this season.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.Ivana-Milicevic-banshee

Collider:  How did you get involved with this show?
IVANA MILICEVIC: I had work with Greg [Yaitanes] before.  It was the middle of pilot season, so there were tons of pilots, but this was the one that I read and really, really wanted.  So, I went in the first time and Greg said, “Oh, you should read a few more episodes.”  I thought he meant I should keep reading pilots.  So, he sent me a couple more episodes that were written, and I just kept being more and more in love with it.  I was just getting over this really horrible heartbreak, and somehow everything I had gone through with it, I could put into this character.  I really knew how to play it.  Mostly, I understood loving somebody you’re not supposed to love, or being in circumstances where you’re not supposed to love this person, or two people.  I knew how to do that.  I had to play her.

How much fun has this been to make?
MILICEVIC:  We put so much love into this.  We had such a special experience.  All shows don’t have this love and passion.  It’s just ‘cause it’s a big deal to everyone.  It’s Greg’s first show, that he’s doing completely on his own.  And it’s the writers’ first creation.  Everybody cared so much, so it means more to us than other things have ‘cause it’s such our baby.

Do you enjoy getting to show the two sides of your character, with her criminal past, and then her being a wife and mother now?
MILICEVIC:  Whatever past you had, when you become a mother, it’s a whole different thing.  You can’t even predict it.  I’ve seen women who were nightmare party girls, who were just crazy, and then they have a baby and this thing comes over them and changes them.  Or there are women who you think are going to be the most doting mother in the world, and then they’re not.  You don’t know how you’ll be affected, when that happens.  So, my character was whoever she was in the past, and then things happened.  There’s this other part of her that is real, as she became a wife and mother, and I don’t know if it ever goes.  Sometimes it does, but maybe it doesn’t.
(thanks to zorg for the pics)
antony starr bansheeDo you think she’s always thought about her past, or did she completely set it aside and hope to never have to think about it again?
MILICEVIC: Look, I’m a chick.  The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies, of all time.  I like the idea that, in the back of her mind, he was always the one.  But, you don’t always marry the love of your life, I supposed.  She married the person she probably should have married, and she loves that person, but it’s not that thing.  But, it’s too late.  She’s all for her family, but it would be a lie to say that she’s over that other one, completely.

How cool is it to be on a show with such strong female characters?
MILICEVIC:  People are like, “Oh, it’s Cinemax,” and yeah, there’s sex there, but not more than any other awesome HBO show.  There’s not more sex than Game of Thrones.  But, the female characters are so strong and fleshed out.  My character is incredible to play.  My two characters, in a way.

Only on an Alan Ball show, can you have a flashback of a sex scene during a sex scene, right in the first episode.  Were you able to see how telling that was for your character, with how disconnected she was from the present sex scene while being so connected to the sex scene in the flashback, and how much that said about each relationship?
MILICEVIC:  Wow, I didn’t even look at it like that because you shoot it different ways.  It’s interesting that you say that.  Thanks for telling me.  I was nervous about that ‘cause it’s full-on.  But, our sex scenes aren’t just there to have a sex scene.  There’s story happening there, and it’s important to get the full picture.  So, you have to watch the sex scenes and not close your eyes.
banshee-anthony starrAre you comfortable with those types of scenes, or do you have to get yourself into a certain headspace?
MILICEVIC:  I had never done it, up until this point, and I was okay with doing it here.  One, I wasn’t going to do it, ever, unless I felt comfortable.  I only have one living grandparent left, so I was like, “Now is the time.”  Two, I always said that, if I was going to do it, then do it.  My favorite of all time is Sex and Lucia.  It’s such a good movie, and how they portrayed sex was so naturally.  It was full-on, but it wasn’t embarrassing, shameful or dirty.  I tried for that.  I wanted it to really be a natural thing.  That’s kind of what it looks like when it happens, just in the positions of the geography of bodies, and things like that.  I wanted it to look natural.  The hardest part of shooting a sex scene are the first seconds when you take off your clothes.  You’re like, “There it is,” but after that, it’s liberating.  But, I’m Croatian.  I’m from Europe.  I grew up not wearing tops, so that’s okay.  But, it’s a whole different thing when you’re about to put it out there.  Then, everyone can say or think whatever they want, after that.  But, if there was ever a character I was going to do it for, it was this one.  I like sexy stuff, and I like sex.
banshee anthony starrWhat can you say about the journey your character is taking?
MILICEVIC:  Rus Blackwell (who plays Gordon) and I would come up with backstories for us, and we came up with a really specific thing of how I got there.  I ran away, after this diamond thing happened and Lucas (Antony Starr) got caught.  I had to stay away from New York, so I stuck to small towns.  I got a waitressing job in Michigan, probably near the University of Michigan, where my husband, Gordon, was in law school.  He would always go to that restaurant and see me all the time.  For him, it was love at first sight, but for me, I was a big old mess.  I was like, “Who’s going to love me?”  Plus, she was more of a criminal mind, at that point.  But, she could play whatever and be whatever someone wanted.
Over time, I wanted him to take that job as the D.A. in a small town because it was even smaller, even further and even more tucked away.  We had children and, little by little, I grew to love him out of respect.  He’s a great man.  And if everything had remained like it was, I would have been the most incredible wife and mother because there was a part of me that always wanted that role.
And then, Lucas comes in like a tsunami and starts wreaking havoc, and there are actions and reactions, and cause and effect.  If you’re thieving and you have this exciting life, there’s gotta be a part of you that’s addicted to it, so I’m probably like a recovering danger addict that someone has given a sip to.  There’s gotta be some element where I’m like, “Oh, yeah, that!”  Otherwise, we wouldn’t have a show.  Being a Real Housewife of Banshee has got to be a little dull, too.
How has it been to work with this cast and get to explore these two relationships, torn between these two very different men, with both her husband and this guy from her past?
MILICEVIC:  So good!  It’s been really lucky because for me to act it, I had them just represent different parts of different relationships I’ve had or want to have, and the actors that played them were so perfectly cast.  Rus Blackwell is this solid, good American man, who’s so sweet, giving and kind, but he’s got some crazy in him and he’s so good at playing crazy.  I have a feeling we’re going to see some of that come out, more and more.  You’ll see a little bit, as the season progresses.  But, he’s such a kind-hearted man.  Antony Starr, who plays Lucas, is so dynamic.  You’ll see that, as the episodes go on.  The first episode we shot was Episode 4, and after I saw it, I said to him, “You are TNT.  You are dynamite.”  He’s so vulnerable.  He’s not just a macho dude.  He’s super tough, and he plays that stuff really well, but he’s so electric.  He’s got electricity coming out of his pores.  You’ll see.  And he has such vulnerability.  He plays the love so openly and earnestly, as opposed to, “Whatever, babe!”  He’s so good at it.  I think the women are going to really love that Lucas Hood.

anthony starr bansheeDon’t you feel like everyone on this show has their own brand of violence?
MILICEVIC:  Yes!  That’s good that you noticed ‘cause that’s totally true.  Everybody has a different way of doing it.  And I was really specific with my brand of violence.  Where Lucas is a killer, I don’t want to hurt them.  I’m not out to kill.  I’m not a killer.  I’ll do it, but it’s not about that.  I’m a mother.  I’m a mama bear.
What type of mother do you see her as?
MILICEVIC:  She’s an overcompensating mother.  When you have these secrets and you know you’re lying to your kids, to some extent, then you’re going to overcompensate.  I think she was a really awesome mother, this whole time, who was really doting, really caring and super affectionate, especially as you find out what happened to her mother, and things like that.  I think she was going to be a really good mother ‘cause she would have never pursued Lucas herself, regardless of how much she loved him.  She would have been the good mother.  That’s still her main objective, to save her family.

Banshee-Ivana-MilicevicJust how ramped up will things get with Rabbit (Ben Cross)?
MILICEVIC:  With that kind of character, that comes from that part of the world, debts do not go unpaid and revenges do not go unavenged.  He’s coming to get paid, someway, somehow.

Do you have a favorite episode this season?
MILICEVIC:  The end of Episode 7, into Episodes 8 and 9.  A lot of things happen.  They’re really kind of one.  No time passes between them.  I can’t even believe I got to play what I played, in those episodes.  But, at the end of the season, into the season finale, the shit hits the fan, and then it blows into another fan.

* these girls literally love to tell grandmother stories. What the hell your grandparents have to do with your career and on-screen nudity? Olivia put-in-my-ass Munn - before Magic Mike - was going around telling everyone her grandmother will be pissed if dear Munnie go naked on-cam. If nana only knows what sweet Olivia doing off it.
Ivana would have earned my respect if she was more honest for her real reason to join the nudity hall of fame:
"Look....at my age it was ridiculous to audition for the same roles I played in my twenties and this being Hollywood, youth is favored over 'experienced' actress. When Banshee came along I grabbed the chance as it's a lifeline for ageing actress like me. Cable shows with 3-to-5 seasons longevity is a safe haven. Insurance policy for women in Hollywood. Nudity is a price you have to pay to stay relevant and tad above your competitors. Anyway I want to flaunt it while still all natural. Walking around naked won't suddenly make me a better actress but smarter than the dodgers. Wished I was more open with my choices when I was younger. I'm glad my co-star Lili Simmons is going all out to stamp her mark in the biz. I been advising her to go for it. Don't be shy or prudish like I was. Truly I feel more liberated than ever in my nakedness".
By the way Banshee has proven to be one of the best - if not the best - show in showcasing nudity and realistic sex scenes. Ivana actually fondling the guy's cock through his pj. My original source who provided the nudity news (and refused to divulge details including of Odette Annable after he learned I have a blog!) said months before that 'everyone on the show will get naked at some point even if they don't in the premiere season'.
Apparently Grey Yaitenes told the cast to be 'flexible' and 'ready for anything'.
Now that second season has been approved - something the Banshee team knew long before the airing of first episode - expect couple of new female characters and host of guest stars. In the best of cable tradition: they are looking for nudity dodgers and upcoming young starlets to fill the roles. I been told to expect some pleasant surprise in months ahead when new cast and guest characters join the show. Remember this fact. It's 'nudity required' from now on for season two. Non-negotiable.

* confirmed topless scene(s) by first-timer Hera Hilmer. I can't guarantee more what with brutal editing and the vibe I'm getting from Goyer in the interviews. The guy is very likely a weak show-runner and appeared flustered when questions turns to sex and nudity. Hope I'm wrong and we'll be treated to feast of full-frontal from Ms. Hilmer.
A small notice:
Backing off from my incessant news on Da Vinci's Demons, White Queen or any British-based or produced series. It's been bad to dire in way of nudity in recent months. I don't know what the hell is going on with the Brits. Perhaps they're actually living up to "we're British, no sex please" mantra on-screen. It's so bad Hollywood are turning to Aussies and (good news) again Canadians for roles with nudity. Even brief nudity is becoming a big issue with the English actresses. You have to admire English artists headstrong and independent streak in making sure they stay in charge, involved and in control during the filming period. That nobody takes advantage of them just because they're foreigners and will be desperate enough to do anything. You'll think this inflexibility will be detrimental to their career in the States. No siree, Bob! Hollywood are still enamored with the Brits. Just few lines spoken in precise Queen's English and you're best thing since Laurence Olivier in La La Land.

Josh Brener and Lindsey Broad Cast In Mike Judge’s HBO Comedy Pilot ‘Silicon Valley’

EXCLUSIVE: Josh Brener (Glory Daze) and Lindsey Broad (The Office) are set to co-star in Silicon Valley, HBO’s single-camera dark comedy pilot from the King Of The Hill trio of Mike Judge, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky and producer Scott Rudin.

They join recently cast T.J. Miller and Thomas Middleditch. Silicon Valley is set in the high tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success. Brener will play Big Head, Thomas’ (Middleditch)  friend and confidant. He doesn’t really have that big of a head but the grade school nickname stuck. His claim to fame is getting himself into the Hacker Hostel incubator with his App idea “Nip Alert” which tells you the location of women with erect nipples. The owner of the Hacker House (Miller) loves him.

Broad will play Tandy. Attractive in a friendly, slightly sloppy way, she is a loyal friend who would never have sex with her girlfriend’s boyfriends. Although a realist about wanting to marry into a comfortable life she has a bit of the romantic in her.

Judge will direct the pilot from a script he co-wrote with Altschuler and Krinsky. The three executive produce with Rudin and 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg and Tom Lassally. Brener, repped by TalentWorks, will be seen in The Internship. Broad, repped by Paradigm, Brillstein and Jackoway Tyerman, was in 21 Jump Street.

* zero info on the show. Maybe this is more Bored To Death kind of series. But 'dark comedy' promises something at least. It doesn't mean every show on HBO will have nudity. 29-years old Lindsey is cute and I think I posted about her somewhere on a forum or this blog after noticing her on The Office. Her age is just about right for us to expect something from Lindsey.

Earn bucks naked: Why working as a nude model at life drawing classes is a breezy way to make cash

life-drawing-career.jpg
Getting your kit off in front of a life drawing class can be a rush, build confidence and be a breezy way to make cash

Ever thought about laying yourself bare, quite literally, for a few quid? Us neither.
But people have been posing nude for the sake of art for centuries, so why are we still so prudish?
After chatting to a handful of London’s professional nude models, it turns out there are not only monetary benefits to standing butt naked in front of a crowd.
Life modelling, we’re told, can be one of the most liberating, intense and exciting ways to get paid. So why not put that slimmed-down new year bod to good use?
“It’s a buzz,” says Simon Lloyd, an Aussie-Brit who’s been nude modelling for 20 years, since he was aged 19.
“It’s a great way to meet people on a cerebral and artistic level. The energy in the room is almost tangible.”Lloyd goes to the gym five times a week and is often booked for his Romanesque hot bod.
Though, he says, a toned physique is not a prerequisite for the job. “Anybody can do it, from a skinny 19-year-old girl to a fat 90-year-old man.”

He adds many life drawing artists prefer a fuller-figured subject – “the curvier, the better”. Lloyd compares his style of modelling to being a still-life “bowl of fruit” for a couple of hours.
He reckons an average life model will earn between £12-15 an hour.
But for Lloyd, posing naked is now his full-time career. He takes individual bookings through his site malelifephotographicmodel.com.
“I will often do three jobs a day,” says Lloyd, who can earn £100 an hour per private commission or when modelling for top artists.
To him, every job is different, and can vary from two- to five-hour sessions.
Some of his appearances will be more discreet, such as when he’s booked for a private girls’ school sixth form art class.
Each scenario will throw up something interesting, reveals Lloyd, who’s also done fashion modelling in the past.
“At a very exclusive girls’ school in Surrey one of the girls ran off when I walked in the room,” he says. “‘I had to call my mum,’ she told me later. ‘I’ve got a picture of you on my wall from a watch advert. I can’t believe my fantasy man is naked in front of me.’”

Alternatively, at hen parties, things can get heated. “I am well-endowed and I’m also a grower,” says Lloyd.
“You’ve got to be careful not to get an erection. If it’s a hen party, though, I might just let it happen. They almost expect it.”
He laughs, “It’s the tasteful alternative to ordering a stripper.”
Lloyd explains that getting aroused in a serious life drawing class is a bit different, and he’ll cover it up. “I’ll say, ‘I’ve got a bit of cramp’ and change positions.”
Londoner Tony Picano, 47, is a life modelling newbie, having spent just a year posing for classes. He reckons the only credentials required are “confidence in the nude” and “the ability to sit still”.
Aussie Ian Smith, 24, backs him up. “I have no problem with public nudity,” he says.
“The money’s good and it’s likely I’ll meet some interesting people and learn a few things as well.”Sharon Smithers, from the UK, found her part-time career later in life, at 51 years of age, but wishes she’d tried it sooner.
“I love my job, you never know what may be asked of you,” she says. “I enjoy being liberated in nudity, posing different kinds of poses, and meeting lovely people.”

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Fawnya Frolic, from Ireland, has used her life modelling job as a confidence booster and form of therapy after trauma.
“Pursuing a career in art was my original life plan, but after experiencing a massive confidence crisis a few years back I was forced to drop out of college,” she explains.
“I have used modelling as a form of self-expression and therapy in overcoming my fear of failure.” After three years of life modelling, Frolic says she’s back on track.
“I’d definitely recommend it,” she tells us. “Regardless of religion, nationality, creed, sexual orientation, body type, or gender, people will want to draw you. I’d also advise people wanting to overcome body issues to give it a go.”

Life Modelling Don’ts

Be professional – life drawing isn’t (most of the time, anyway) a place for sniggering at rudey nudey bits.
As such, the one with the goods on display should be just as respectful. It’s all about the art.
Boys, do your best not to get aroused, this can be hugely embarrassing for both you and the artists.
Do as Austin Powers would do and think, “Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day.”
Practice your pose. If you have to change a pose just 30 minutes in to a class, the artists will not be too impressed. Pick a position you feel comfortable in.
