The Worst Celebrity Advice Ever Given
Celebrities are often immortalized and looked up to by millions of adoring fans. And with their clear skin, pearly white teeth and seemingly perfect bodies it is no question why legions of people would blindly follow any advice they spew in an attempt to attain even an iota of the success and lifestyle that they have. However, not all advice that celebrities give is going to be exactly groundbreaking. In fact, a lot of times it can be downright awful. Read on for just a few examples of some of the worst celebrity advice ever given.Tom Cruise—“Psychiatry is a Pseudoscience”
In a heated interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show in 2005, known Scientologist Tom Cruise grew quite testy when Lauer brought up the feud the actor had with Brooke Shields when she spoke of her use of psychiatric drugs to help her through her postpartum depression. Cruise confessed that he never believed in psychiatry, even before he became a Scientologist, and believed that psychiatric drugs only “mask the problem.” Cruise insisted that “there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance,” and that through the use of “vitamins and exercise” a person can be cured. This, of course, got the actor into quite a bit of trouble with the American Psychiatric Association (APA), as well as the general public. The APA soon released a statement in response to Cruise’s remarks, with the APA President Dr. Steven S. Sharfstein stating: “It is irresponsible for Mr. Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views and deter people with mental illness from getting the care they need.” Having a history of family members who have suffered from mental illnesses and seeing the effects firsthand, I have to agree and say that this is definitely horrible advice.Beyoncé Knowles—How to lose weight really quickly
When Beyoncé appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2006 to promote her role in Dreamgirls she admitted to using the Master Cleanse in order to shed the 20 pounds she needed to play Deena Jones. For those of you who don’t know what the Master Cleanse is, it consists of drinking a putrid combination of fresh lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water six to 12 times a day whenever you feel hungry, in addition to taking herbal laxatives. This is a stark contrast to my method of satisfying my hunger, which is to grab a Snickers of course! Beyoncé admitted that during the cleanse she was cranky and afterwards she quickly gained back the weight and was happy to return to her regular diet.Megan Fox—Leave the gym behind, and do some shots… of vinegar?!
Megan Fox has the petite, toned body most women (and men) dream of. So when she said that she was never really much of a gym rat and instead got her body by downing shots, I personally let out a sigh of relief in the hopes that I could put down the dumbbells and hit up the bar. That is until my dreams of having abs of steel were quickly squandered when Fox revealed that it was not shots of alcohol, but shots of vinegar that helped her achieve her enviable physique. Fox claims the vinegar diet “cleanses out your system entirely,” and can also help you get rid of that pesky water weight associated with menstruation. First of all, ew. Secondly, this is an unrealistic and unhealthy weight-loss plan and unfortunately is not the answer to detoxifying or losing weight. So for now I will just stick to the common sense diet: eating right and exercising regularly!Gisele Bundschen—Do not poison your body with SPF!
Former Victoria’s Secret model, mother, wife of Tom Brady, overall perfect specimen and ultimate bronze goddess, Gisele Bundschen, can now add another title to her resume: dermatologist! Back in 2011, Bundschen angered many cancer experts when, at the launch of her own organic skin care line, she told the Daily Mail that she refuses to wear sunscreen, proclaiming “I cannot put that poison on my skin…I do not use anything synthetic.” As a compromise, Bundschen only exposes her skin to the sun’s rays before 8 am when it is still too weak to do any real damage. Dolival Loao, head of dermatology at Brazil’s National Cancer Institute, said “Sunscreen prevents damage to the skin and is of fundamental importance for the prevention of cancer.” Being Irish, and having skin so sensitive to sun exposure that even 15 minutes in direct sunlight leaves me as red as a lobster, I am definitely not able to go without the protection of SPF, so I think that I will risk being “poisoned.”Taylor Swift—The many lives of the Sharpie
Are you a sucker for the cat-eye look so easily created with liquid eyeliner, but crave something with a little more longevity? Well, look no further because according to Taylor Swift a Sharpie may just be the answer to your prayers! You know, the Sharpie, the permanent marker with the potent fumes often used by celebrities to sign autographs? According to Swift this is just the thing to use when you are in a pinch. The singer found out the hard way that this was not the wisest of choice, telling DailyMakeover “I was on a plane to Japan and I had no makeup with me, so I went into the bathroom and I used a Sharpie to line my eyes.” I cannot imagine ever putting a permanent marker with such potent fumes anywhere on my face, especially not anywhere near the delicate eye area! There is no real guarantee that it would come off since it is permanent, and the chemicals could be quite toxic if they got in your eyes. Swift has since advised women not to do this. While we all may enjoy the entertainment celebs bring us, we must remember that they are human, just like us. And while it may seem like they have all the answers and they look like they have it all figured out, sometimes they don’t. And sometimes they too can say some pretty crazy things! So heed all advice and take caution when listening to the advice of some celebs because it might not be the best!
