thanks to Jon for the heads-up
Some screener copies went out for early reviews, and they indicate a hefty amount of nudity from Sara. It's also worth noting the flick was directed by her boyfriend, Jared Cohn. Sara's only previous foray into film nudity was in another picture he directed: "12/12/12".Sara Malakul Lane in Jailbait (2013)
Movie Review #1: Jail Bait (2013)
Our main gal eventually starts getting into the "habits" of the prison.Yes you get an incredibly hot lesbian sex scene which isn't sleazy but realistic. You get the warden who is pond scum and rapes our hero.Sara Malakul Lane is a revelation. I'm hoping we see much more of her in the future. Her performance is A-list worthy. She doesn't over act, she's a natural beauty (explains why she modeled in Thailand) but she's not your typical model turned actress. She's got some serious acting chops and blows away all the current working Independent film actresses. For someone so young, it's amazing she's capable of giving performances like this. Not many actresses are capable of bringing me to tears with their performances but Sara achieved that... bravo to her. She's astonishing.
I went in expecting an exploitation film, but what I got was one of the best dramas of 2013.
Movie Review #2: Jail Bait (2013)
Jailbait is the kind of dark and gritty throwback to 1970s prison sexploitation flicks that makes you feel icky and dirty just watching it, and chances are if you're any bit normal and right in the head you'll feel like you need to take a shower right after watching it to wash off all the mental dirt and grit. Sara Malakul Lane plays a pleasant and shy cello-playing girl that ends up getting violently beaten and raped by her father, who she then accidentally murders while defending herself. It's this act that lands her in the prison that the main bulk of the movie takes place in, and things only get worse for her from there, having to deal with corrupted guards, brutal beatings by her fellow female inmates, continuous rape by the Warden, constant fighting and brawls with rival gangs, drug addiction, and having to go up against guards in full riot gear during scraps that get way out of hand (as well as plenty of other similar-style situations that I'll leave for you to discover on your own). It's almost hard to believe that in real life director Jared Cohn and actress Sara Malakul Lane are actually an item, because he really does not hold back on constantly putting her character through one horrifying deprecating act after another, and hardly a scene goes by that doesn't end with her naked. And what makes it all the more brutal and hard to watch is that everything that happens to her is portrayed and shot in a very realistic manner, almost at times feeling like it's on the verge of being a snuff film.Movie Review #3: Jail Bait (2013)
JAILBAIT is all the worst-case scenarios of every "woman in chains" prison movie ever made. The prison is a zoo of the worst the California Prison System has failed to rehabilitate. And Anna is just a party favor, introduced into lesbianism by her cellmate (Jennifer Robyn Jacobs), forced into choosing sides in the prison hierarchy by Kody (BIKINI SPRING BREAK's Erin O'Brien), attacked by the African American gang for making the wrong choice, and thrown into solitary confinement (always naked, no less) more time than this reviewer could count. But the biggest of the lowest is Warden Frank Baragan (#holdyourbreath's Steve Hanks), who takes "special favor" to Anna - whenever the mood suited him. The only thing writer/director Jared Cohn flinched on was that Anna was not Linda Blair'd. Still, the BORN BAD writer/director crammed as much sex, nudity, drug use, and violence to classify this film as grindhouse quality. The film is unrated, but has hard-R nudity, hard-R sex, hard-R violence, rape, and drug use; don't expect this film on the Lifetime Channel anytime soon. If you need a harder women's prison fix than the ones "back then," 17 and LIFE: JAILBAIT will satisfy the most jaded sensationalist junkie.
Movie Review #4: Jail Bait (2013)
The mature subject matter of the film is only undercut by the overwrought use of punk rock songs on the soundtrack that take you out of the moment at times and possible one too many graphic sex scenes. You heard me correctly. I’m complaining about too much sex in a movie. Now, don’t get me wrong, Lane is very easy on the eyes, almost too easy on the eyes and when she’s coupled with Kody, leader of the Low Riders, it’s much hotter than any prison sex scene should be. Sure, there are the Corman movies that featured buxom beauties doing what they had to do to survive in their female prisons, but in the case of Jailbait, the story of the film is so tragic, that to short shrift that with a Skinemax-esque sex scene almost feels like a cheat.
Movie Review #5: Jail Bait (2013)
The Warden takes a liking to her and she becomes almost like a sex slave to him and his perverted desires. The positives are: this film is not afraid to test the waters and take scenes too far. This film depicts rape as the evil sleazy crime it is. It does not glamourize it or makes the actress look like some dope just sitting there posing. The lesbian scenes were very hardcore even for The Asylum. Jared Cohn has this knack that if you saw 12/12/12 you know he knows where the line is between offensive and just plain out never to be shot for camera, and he does not care.Sara Malakul Lane: Interview
Any new upcoming projects?SARA: I just wrapped another Asylum movie with Jared directing. It’s called “Jailbait”, and it’s about an all girls juvenile prison. I play the role of Anna Nix. It was probably the best most intense filming experience I have ever had. Every scene in this movie really pushes the boundaries – its gritty, raw and explicit. We really went all out crazy with this one, which required a lot of bravery from all the cast and the director. We also had a female DP (Laura Beth Love) who was so talented and such a joy to work with. There was true artistry on this movie from everyone involved – the art department, the make up, everything. Also I had read the script (written by Jared) a year ago so when I found out I got the role I was already very familiar with the story.
Behind The Scenes with Sara Malakul Lane
Remember how we recently interviewed actress Sara Malakul Lane? Well, we were so impressed with her that we decided to invite her to join the somethingyousaid.com team as a regular contributor. Here’s her debut article, in which she talks us through life behind the scenes of ‘Jailbait’, her upcoming movie:Jailbait is the story of Anna Nix – a girl who has been convicted of killing her abusive stepfather. She is sentenced to four-to-eight years in an all-girls’ juvenile prison. I play the role of Anna. It’s the fist time I have acted in a project where my character is in pretty much in every single frame of the movie.
There are not many scripts out there that focus on a female protagonist and I fought hard to get the job: I pierced my lip, cut five inches off my hair, agreed to get naked and lost my manager in the process. Even though I knew I had a fairly good shot at getting the role, there is always the chance that a name actress would be offered the part… so I went all out.
Being raped, beaten, smoking crack, throwing up. That pretty much sums up a standard day on set for me. I see it as make-believe, play time. I mean, how often do you get to wear a straight jacket, scream like a motherfucker and get the crap beaten out of you by a bunch of girls? it is kind of fun. We had to have a safety word (“kiwi”, if you care to know) because things got crazy, especially during the riot scenes. When you put a bunch of pent-up actress chicks that live in LA in orange jump suits and tell them to beat the living shit out of each other, it gets hardcore. Putting on the jumpsuit immediately makes you feel a little more gangster, and it’s not often you get the go-ahead to punch a girl in the face. I get pulled away halfway through the riot by prison guards so I got to see some of it from behind the monitor. When the director yelled “cut” most of the girls were so into it that they kept going. The coolest part was that everyone was game, no cared if they got a little bruised. I think there is a little thug in everyone; you just have to give yourself permission to bring it out.
My boyfriend, Jared Cohn, wrote the script and directed the film. I love working with him, he is great at what he does. Because he wrote the script, he knew exactly what he wanted for the story and the characters. He also knows me really well and what makes me tick, so that made it easy.He is a very decisive director; he doesn’t over-shoot stuff. He has acted before in a lot of movies, he has also shot a lot of movies and worked as crew, so he knows every facet of the production. He gets it when an actor is frustrated or flustered; he understands his DP, and what they need to be happy with the shot. The rape scenes and the lesbian love scenes were kind of awkward, but there is really no getting around that. You just learn to embrace the awkwardness and make it a part of the performance.
The movie was shot in eleven days. It was a very intense experience but I’m glad I didn’t have much downtime otherwise I may have gotten freaked out. I had to do some crazy things. There was one day when I thought – is this really a good idea? You kind of have to take the plunge and fully commit. The days went by really quickly though. You kind of feel like you are in another dimension when you are shooting a movie. You don’t really know what is going on with the rest of the world, there could be a mass shooting and you wouldn’t know about it. It’s all about the script, the lines and the characters in and outside of the movie.
We shot an average of nine pages a day. Each day was different, depending on the location. We shot two days on a plant in Long Beach, that was literally a factory where they take shit (yeah, like real human faeces) and convert it into gas which somehow creates energy (who knew?). I couldn’t really eat much that day because of the smell.
The majority of the movie though was shot at a real juvenile correctional facility, which shut down about ten years ago. There was definitely a creepy energy about the place. There were still scratches on the walls. It helped to have such an authentic location.
A week after we wrapped Jailbait, I flew to Thailand to shoot Pernicious: a horror movie directed by James Cullen Bressack. Again, it was emotionally taxing, but I had a much smaller role so it wasn’t as intense. The imagery of a heavily pregnant woman hanging herself just sold me – I wanted to have that experience in make believe.
I find it fun to go to dark places and learn more about myself. I also find people who choose to hang themselves kind of fascinating – what drives them to that point? It takes a lot more thought and planning to hang yourself as oppose to spontaneously jumping off a bridge or putting a gun to your head.
Initially, I was on such an exhilarating high having been a part of two great projects in a row that I thought I was invincible, but the emotional strain did eventually catch up to me and I felt waves of sadness that seemingly came out of nowhere. I realized it was probably all the dark daydreams I put myself through. It passes, but if you make yourself cry, think awful thoughts and put yourself in imaginary tragic situations everyday for three weeks, you cant expect it not to have a consequence on your overall mental health. I just kind of rode the wave, had a couple of days in bed, wallowed, indulged in my sorrows and then moved on.
* This is what I was expecting from Orange Is The New Black in terms of sexual content. My man Jared gets to enjoy a live lesbian show thanks to his GF. This kind of relationship rarely lasts once sex becomes an element for one half of the couple to impress the other on-cam. Props to Jared. The dude knows his trade. He hired a female DP Laura Beth Love to make the girls comfortable in racy scenes. I'm all for female DP's. Laura also lensed Alpha House (nudity from most of the female cast), Tableau Vivant (80% chance of T-and-A by Tamzin Brown) and Zen and the Art of Senioritis (check out the synopsis : ) )
Jared also seems to share his pal James Cullen Bressack fetish for shower scenes. One movie I can't wait for in 2014 is Pernicious with high probability of first time nudity by Power Rangers Ciara Hanna. I wanted to include Jackie Moore but according to her in an interview, she did her first sex scene in Headshot (not listed at IMDB).
