Japanese Women: The New Demographic For Porn
Like it or not, porn is without a doubt one of the largest industries in the world. You can often find it entirely by accident simply by entering the wrong (or right?) search terms into Google–even with Safe Search turned on! But if we’re being completely honest, it really seems like the industry is a bit one-sided. After all, when you imagine a non-specific someone watching porn, you probably picture a man alone in a dark room clicking furiously around the Internet.
But things are starting to change in Japan, thanks to a few enterprising “adult-oriented” companies who are targeting females.
Now, “porn for women” has been attempted before, obviously, but it rarely seems to go quite the right way. Romance novels apparently do well, but women aren’t really catered to as an audience for porn videos. Which is just silly, when you think about it! Women love sex as much as men do, we reckon. And they account for roughly half the world’s population–that’s a pretty big demographic to just ignore, isn’t it?

The problem seems to be that the porn industry either doesn’t know how to make videos that appeal to women–or they just don’t care. Love Place, a Japanese adult entertainment company targeting women, aims to change all that!Using a formula of “ikemen (sexy men) x eroticism x love drama,” the company produces videos that feature love stories designed to appeal to women–with lots of steamy sex scenes as well. Started by “ikemen sommeliers” Naomi Oki and Mika Naito, the company has a large stable of “sexy men” to star in their films. Instead of the, shall we say “well-endowed” gentlemen who are chosen to star in videos targeting men, Love Place and other “love cinema” companies look for young, handsome actors like Kousei Sakurada, who won Love Place’s first “Ikemen Grand Prix” in 2013.

So, why are Japanese women suddenly interested in porn? According to an article on Rakuten Women, women are slowly taking on more and more masculine roles socially, living alone, and increasingly single. Social networking services are keeping them from getting lonely–but they’re still feeling a bit unsatisfied in other ways. These “love cinema” movies are designed to fill the sexual void that many single Japanese women are feeling.▼That’s the money shot! Apparently…
In addition to sexy videos with B-grade (or possibly Z-grade) acting, Japanese women can also attend “eromen” (erotic men) events, where they can see their favorite sexy men in the flesh. Silk Labo, another production company catering to women which has been around since 2009, has regular events where popular eromen perform…though we’re not entirely sure what that means in this context. We doubt they’re juggling…▼Silk Labo’s The Best Collection II
We’re not sure how a crying girl is sexy, but there you go…
While it’s hard to tell just how big the industry has grown or how much larger it will get, the only thing that’s really surprising about it is how long it’s taken to get started! We’re not sure how a crying girl is sexy, but there you go…
For ladies (or gentlemen) interested in checking out the videos for themselves, both Silk Labo and Love Place have DVDs available on Amazon Japan. Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone if you click those links!
