Jessica Chastain: Bracing for Cannes exposure
By Bryan Alexander, USA TODAY
Jessica Chastain is back in force for the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Last year she was part of Terrence Malick's Tree of Life which took the prestigious Palm d'Or award.
This year Chastain is part of two prominent films: John Hillcoat's Lawless (which is in competition) and she voices a part in Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (screening out of competition).
One challenge with viewing the much-buzzed about Lawless -- Chastain has a very prominent nude scene which she will have to watch with hundreds of other viewers at the film's premiere.
"It's going to be interesting to see this film in a huge theater," says Chastain, speaking at the Euphoria-Calvin Klein party on Thursday night. "Because I am, you know, more exposed."
Let's say, a lot more exposed in this particular scene.
"It will be totally embarrassing," she adds, breaking into peels of giggles. "I am going to be bright red. I'll have to cover my eyes during that scene."
Chastain plays a beautiful, mysterious woman who enters the world of a bootlegging family in Virginia during the Prohibition Era -- the brothers are played by Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy. Chastain's character eventually falls for the supremely tough, but socially awkward Hardy character who does more punching than talking in the movie.
When the two do get together, it's Chastain's character who initiates it.
"So I am a woman very much in control in that scene," says Chastain. "I am not being objectified. So I was excited to shoot it. It puts the woman in a very powerful position."
Chastain is continuing to do big work after her break-through, Oscar-nominated 2011 -- she received the best supporting nom for The Help while starring in Take Shelter and The Debt.
But she absolutely refuses -- in the nicest possible way -- to discuss her role in the Kathryn Bigelow's top secret Osama Bin Laden movie which she is working on currently. In this movie, Chastain has zero exposure.
"I can say there is more secrecy in this film than in the actual hunt (for Bin Laden) itself," says Chastain.
* It will be 35-years old first frontal scene. Praying it will be a lingering shot. Warning though: Merkin could be part of the equation.
