Amy Adams stars in one of the most anticipated films at this year's festival, The Master, alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The film, which was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is a tale of a wandering WWII veteran who befriends the charismatic founder of a new religion. When asked about her most surreal moment from the film Adams says, "One of the most surreal moments? Filming a scene in which Phoenix’s character suddenly sees all the women at a party naked. That was one of the weirdest nights of my life because I was right at [waist] level,” she says. "The reason that it was so surreal for me is that typically when we see women naked in our society, aside from in life, they’re acting like they know they’re naked. But here the idea is that we’re all acting like we have clothes on. And so to see women of all ages and body types jumping around and dancing and very unselfconsciously presenting themselves, that was so surreal because you just don’t see that. So that was part of it. It was just ‘We’re naked,’ but everyone’s acting like they have clothes on. TIFF 2012 Review: HERE COMES THE DEVIL, And He's Looking For Sex

Here Comes the Devil is only the second film I'm seen by writer-director Adrián García Bogliano, following a recent viewing of his "geriatric lunatics with nitroglycerine" horror movie Cold Sweat only a few weeks ago. Seeing both films in such close proximity caused me a small amount of psychic whiplash, with the first movie a seedy, sometimes silly work that careened from Saw-style torture scenarios in a decrepit mansion to an abrupt homage to The People Under the Stairs with sun-deprived boys replaced with nude, feral camgirls.
And two years later, here we have the (relatively) more sedate, though no less lunatic Here Comes the Devil which goes for a more traditional psychological style of horror for most of its running time punctuated by abrupt, uncomfortable and/or grotesque bursts of emotional and physical violence.
A prologue featuring a steamy tryst between two women (Jessica Iris and Dana Dorel : both are lesbo for each other off the cam as well so it's likely they're are nude couple) set to sexy brass music would almost convince you that Bogliano was back in his Cold Sweat zone, ending that sequence with a vicious, abbreviated home invasion by a machete-wielding madman. The would-be killer retreats to the dunes, taking a grisly box of trophies with him, where... something... happens to him and we jump to the real subjects of the film, the nuclear family comprised of Felix (Francisco Barreiro), wife Sol (Laura Caro), and children Adolfo and Sara (Alan Martinez, Michele Garcia).
The family vacation turns dire when the kids go missing in the ominous hills near a truck stop, and get strange when the kids just as suddenly return, quiet and distant. With prodding from a child psychiatrist, Sol is convinced that the kids may have been molested, leading her and Felix to a bloody act of justice. But whatever happened to Adolfo and Sara, it isn't the everyday horror of molestation, but something stranger and more dangerous.
So much of what happens here rests on the shoulders of actors Barreiro and Caro, who are asked to communicate a breakdown in a marriage in the midst of initially subtle supernatural goings-on. When things get full-tilt weird, the movie, as so many of these types of films do, focuses on the mother who is more in tune with the children. Sol is the first to be aware that something is wrong with Sara and the first to ultimately discover the truth of it. It's a tricky role that could potentially descend into histrionics, but Caro gives her character a steeliness and resolve to protect her kids and later a different kind of determination to deal with what walked out of those hills.
The story is pretty straightforward, but that abruptness that I mentioned earlier--both in violence and sex--give the movie its unsettling feel. After its opening, Here Comes the Devil's pacing could almost be described as languid, even after the kids comes back from the hills, but it gives that last third all that more impact for shifting the earth out from under you and tilting into another, more gruesome and odd film. I wish we could have learned more about that first killer who made his way out of the hills or gotten more time with Felix and Sol after their trip back into the wild, but I guess I should be impressed that Bogliano left me wanting more with his curious horror film. If only for the unusual, lurching changes that the movie goes through as it makes its way towards its finale, Here Comes the Devil is definitely worth checking out.

SINGAPORE – HBO Asia is making its first foray into original series, launching a prime-time, locally produced drama in collaboration with ABC TV.
Serangoon Road is a 10-episode detective drama series set in 1960s Singapore, starring one of Asia’s leading actors, Joan Chen (pictured). The series, which is currently in production, will air across the 22 markets currently covered by HBO Asia.
Serangoon Road will have 10 hour-long episodes, and will be a detective drama set against Singapore in the 1960s. Australian Don Hany plays an Australia-born Sam Callaghan who is asked by Patricia (Joan Chen) to take over her late husband's detective agency where he gets embroiled in the shadowy world of Chinese secret societies.
It tells the story of Australian-born Sam Callaghan (Don Hany), whose childhood was spent in WWII’s Japanese internment camps and who returned to fight in the Malayan Emergency. He is a man deeply scarred by both these experiences. When his neighbour Patricia (Joan Chen) asks him to help keep her recently-murdered husband’s private detective agency afloat, Sam reluctantly agrees.
So begins a journey that sees Sam enticed into an unpredictable, dangerous world where the Chinese Secret Society gangs fight to control the streets, foreign powers vie for power and covert intelligence, and the city itself is a hotbed of racial and political turmoil.
His investigations, and his lover (Maeve Dermody), draw him into the privileged world of the European ex-pats with their fading colonial attitudes, opulence and political intrigues.
The detective agency’s activities also quickly bring Sam and Patricia into conflict with some of Singapore’s most powerful and ruthless factions – factions that are not afraid to kill to keep their secrets.
HBO Asia’s move towards an original series marks a significant milestone for the channel, which has to date been famed for bringing the best of Hollywood to Asia.
It’s the latest in a long line of regional networks that are making stronger efforts to create locally produced content in a bid to be more relevant for Asian audiences.
Jonathan Spink, chief executive officer at HBO Asia, suggested the investment is just the beginning of HBO Asia’s commitment to produce “top quality, relevant and riveting content”.
“We’re very pleased to be in partnership with ABC TV to produce HBO Asia’s very first original series, the highest quality locally produced drama for our Asian audience”, he said.
Financing partners include HBO Asia, ABC TV and ABC Commercial, ScreenWest, and international distributors Content Television and Digital, a division of Content Media Corporation.
The series is being co-produced by Perth’s Great Western Entertainment and Singapore’s Infinite Studios.
* HBO-Asia is making great inroads into the South-East Asia region in terms of franchising local content with established overseas shows. The jump into producing original content is the next logical step. Singapore in recent years have loosened their stringent censorship laws concerning sex/nudity so it's no surprise HBO chose to produce a series with high-potential for nudity. It's been a hard region to crack. The need to comply with local censorship laws at the beginning of the new millennium. But the emergence of Internet video streaming (and on-line piracy) have provided consumers with easy access to series like Californication and Game of Thrones - all 'uncut' or 'edited'. The subsequent drop of subscriptions from 2010 onwards have forced HBO/Cinemax and other cable providers to pressure the local governments (through lobbyists. Yep. The Asians have their own blood-suckers to contend with) to allow some leeway. Art and entertainment scene in Singapore is on path to liberalization in every sense of the word. Nudity on stage is common now. We just have to wait to see how far they will push the nudity boundary. I'm optimistic as the series is patterned after Starz Magic City. FORMER Miss World Rosanna Davison’s much anticipated naked Playboy pictures are about to be published – but only in Germany.
The Dublin model stripped off for the pictures during a two day photo shoot on the sunny island of Mauritius earlier this year.
Irish fans may be disappointed though as currently the photos will only be available in the German edition of the legendary magazine.
However there is mounting speculation that the photos may make the main US version of the magazine – Playboy founder Hugh Hefner keeps a close eye on all international editions of the publication in order to find new models for the iconic American version.
The UCD graduate has insisted that the photos will be both elegant and classy, telling The Sun: “I’m thrilled that it was tastefully done – something I would have been insistent on.”
“It was an experience I really enjoyed in the end. Everyone from my boyfriend Wes to my family have been supportive since I made the decision”, she continued.
The magazine is expected to fly off the shelves in Germany, where Rosanna has already built up a large fan following through her modelling career.
The 28 year old, who is currently on holidays in New York, spoke of how she knew the shoot would be a risk for her career – “I’m a big believer in taking opportunities in life and pushing boundaries. Ultimately, when I’m old and wrinkly, I’ll have shots like these to look back on”.

SO Rosanna Davison’s shoot for the German edition of Playboy was "tastefully done" according to the model herself. But of course it was... In the history of the magazine has there ever been a woman who stripped off for it who claimed it was done otherwise?
The model then proceeds to trot out all the clichéd reasons as to why she decided to go down Playboy route: That she was entirely comfortable with it; that she’ll have the shots to look back on when she’s “old and wrinkly” and that she’s a big believer in “taking opportunities in life and pushing boundaries. “ It’s a shame she didn’t say she found it liberating and empowering while she was at it.
That Rosanna might think that posing for Playboy to be a good move is understandable. What’s next for a 28-year-old former Miss World, who might have a solid modelling career in Ireland but who has yet to make inroads internationally?
Apparently Playboy founder Hugh Hefner keeps an eye on international editions of the mag in order to find new models so there’s a possibility that the model will end up in the US mag.

Playboy might be iconic but it’s hardly illustrious. The first edition featured Marilyn Monroe (actually, she didn’t pose but Hugh Hefner acquired nude photographs of her) but of late, the calibre of celebrity deciding to pose for it hasn’t been so great – think troubled actress Lindsay Lohan, Kate Middleton’s stripper cousin and hard partying American Pie star, Tara Reid.
There’s also the question as to whether Playboy has any relevance anymore. The internet has robbed the mag of much of its illicit thrill.
Rosanna might say now that she doesn’t regret it but she can’t be sure. Dannii Minogue wept as she revealed she did Playboy to pay off her debts, and bitterly regretted it, not finding much consolation in the fact that it became the best-selling edition of Australian Playboy in its history.
One of the most interesting comments that Rosanna has made about her Playboy experience is that: “Everyone from my boyfriend Wes to my family have been supportive since I made the decision.” Really? Her father Chris must be a lot more open-minded than your average daddy. But it’s difficult not to think that most people’s reaction would be that of director Steven Spielberg’s when his goddaughter Drew Barrymore posed for ‘Playboy’. Kate Mara plays a woman going back to her high school reunion in '10 Years,' a new film with Channing Tatum The great-granddaughter of the NY Giants founder Timothy Mara and sister of Rooney Mara finds herself busy with film and TV roles
In the new Channing Tatum dramedy “10 Years,” Kate Mara plays a one-time wallflower who attends her high-school reunion. But in real life, the 29-year-old actress says she wouldn’t have gone to such an event in a million years.
“I’m an idiot,” the Bedford, N.Y., native laughs. “We started shooting ‘10 Years’ a month [after her own reunion], so I should’ve gone for research. But the thought of trying to remember everybody’s names gave me such anxiety!”
Still, Mara found a way around the problem: “My older brother and I graduated the same year, so he went and gave me the scoop.”
Writer-director Jamie Linden, a close friend of Mara’s since she co-starred in 2006’s “We Are Marshall” (which he wrote), says he based the character of Elise in “10 Years,” which opens Friday, on Mara’s own teenage experiences.
“She wasn’t very popular, and she kept to herself,“ Linden says. “But she knew what she wanted to do.”
“I was shy and really hated school,” Mara says. “I was focused on acting, and couldn’t wait to get out, so I graduated a year early and started working.”
But she wasn’t too introverted to sing the national anthem at New York Giants home games when she was growing up.
That may have come easy, though: Mara’s the great-granddaughter of the franchise’s founder, Timothy Mara, and her dad Chris Mara has worked as a scout and team exec for Kate’s entire life. (Her uncle John is the Giants’ president and CEO; her grandfather Wellington was a co-owner until his death in 2005.)
Needless to say, nothing could stop her from being there for the Giants’ two recent Super Bowl victories. “This past year, I got so sick the day before, and I thought I wouldn’t [be able to catch] a flight,” Mara says. “But I got there, and it felt like a whirlwind, a dream.”
That’s not her only NFL connection. Mara’s other great-grandfather, Art Rooney, founded the Pittsburgh Steelers. So which team would she root for if Big Blue faced the Black and Gold in this year’s Super Bowl? “I’m much closer with the Giants’ side of my family,“ she says. “But there’s no way of losing if that happens!”
That noncompetitive spirit extends to Mara’s relationship with her younger sister, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” star Rooney Mara.
“We’re only two years apart, but we have such different energies and looks that it’s not confusing for people,” says Kate. “We’re also in very different stages of our careers — she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar [for “Dragon Tattoo”]. But we’ve always been each other’s biggest fan, so that makes it a lot easier.”
Though she’s had parts in the Oscar-nominated “127 Hours” — as a flirty hiker who hangs out briefly with Aron Ralston (James Franco — and “Brokeback Mountain” (as Heath Ledger’s grown daughter), Mara’s still waiting to break out.
“Kate’s one role away from doing what her sister’s doing,” says Linden. “She’s certainly got the chops. She can convey vulnerability while being beautiful and intelligent.”
Perhaps her big break will come on the small screen, considering how she stole her scenes as Dylan McDermott’s ghostly ex-girlfriend on Season 1 of FX’s Emmy-nominated “American Horror Story.”
“That was the most fun I’ve ever had as an actor,” says Mara, who’d previously worked with that show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, playing a bisexual cheerleader on “Nip/Tuck.”
She’s currently shooting the direct-to-Netflix “House of Cards” in Baltimore, playing a reporter opposite Kevin Spacey in the political miniseries co-created by “Dragon Tattoo” director David Fincher.
Mara won’t discuss her personal life, though she’s reportedly been canoodling with her “10 Years” co-star Justin Long. “Keeping your private life as private as possible is the smartest thing,” the actress says, adding, “It makes it easier to play certain roles, because people don’t know who you are as a person. It’s the Old Hollywood way.”
Maybe Mara is still on the shy side, but she’s come a long way from high school. “If 10 years ago I was told I’d be where I am now, I would’ve been pretty happy.
“I feel like I’m exactly where I should be.”

HBO Producer Dana Brunetti to HBO Digital Exec: The Web Will Destroy You
Dana Brunetti, a prominent Hollywood producer with a first-look deal at HBO, said Tuesday that web video will “destroy networks and conglomerates as we know it.” Brunetti (pictured left), producer of “The Social Network” and president of Kevin Spacey’s Trigger Street Productions, is co-producing the upcoming film version of the bestseller "Fifty Shades of Grey" and producing David Fincher’s “House of Cards” for Netflix. He took no pains to hide that he has enjoyed shifting from working with a TV network or film studio to the red envelope. “What I find most exciting about online video is that it’s the future,” Brunetti said during a panel at TechCrunch’s Disrupt Conference in San Francisco that included HBO’s Allison Moore. “Look at HBO and how they started, or AMC or Showtime – any of the places you watch the best original content now.” “They started with movies, and Netflix started with movies. Now it’s going the traditional route of creating original content.” Brunetti described how Netflix committed to making two full seasons of “House of Cards,” which stars Spacey as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. In contrast, most networks commit to a pilot, using it as a test to see if the idea is worth a series. “It was almost impossible to say no to,” Brunetti said of the Netflix deal. “They gave us creative control, which you never get at a traditional network.” Moore, who is HBO’s SVP of digital platforms, objected to Brunetti’s forecast of the future, though she diplomatically described it as a difference of opinion. She did note that one key to HBO’s success is that it offers artists greater creative freedom while also playing a role in the development process. Brunetti acknowledged that the likes of Netflix or Machinima, whose CEO Allen DeBevoise shared the stage with Brunetti, Moore and YouTube executive Malik Ducard, need to upgrade their development teams. Yet Brunetti persisted in forecasting the fall of TV, castigating one of the industry's more successful digital initiatives – HBO Go. Brunetti voiced a complaint felt by many – consumers who don’t subscribe to HBO should still be able to pay for HBO Go as a separate service. The crowd, though shrinking as people ate in advance of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's session, offered vociferous approval. It appeared Moore (right) had had enough when Brunetti accused HBO of leaving money on the table by not simply charging $8 for an HBO Go account. “It’s a little presumptuous to say $8 will make the business whole,” Moore said. When one considers production values, distribution and marketing, the math doesn’t add up, she noted. For now, TV Everywhere and an authenticated version of HBO Go remain the best approach for HBOd. “The best thing a company like us can do is keep making amazing content, Moore said. bout that amazing content. Everyone on stage -- even those in the web video space -- acknowledged that the quality of online content needs to improve. “The production value of YouTube videos is not there,” Brunetti said. Still, DeBevoise insisted it is easy to identify the impact web video is having by the big entertainment players entering the space, citing Legendary Entertainment’s recent acquisition of Nerdist Industries. “Players at the very highest end, spending $200 million for a movie, are looking around the platforms saying, ‘Hey, I can change the dynamics of development,'” DeBevoise said. DeBevoise also said TV was now approaching his company for help, hoping Machinima can drive its massive fan base to watch a show like "The Walking Dead" by creating video campaigns. "One of the great ironies of the last conversation was our fastest growing customer base is TV," DeBevoise said. "One thing you can do on YouTube is drive numbers to a demo.
