More Zombieland Casting News Leads to Wichita

More Zombieland Casting News Leads to Wichita Maiara WalshMore casting news has come in for the small screen TV version of the cult hit Zombieland as the shoes of another main character from the movie have been officially filled. Read on to see who's next to follow the rules.

THR is reporting that Maiara Walsh (pictured right; "The Vampire Diaries," "Switched at Birth") has booked the central role of Wichita in the comedic adaptation of the 2009 feature.

Walsh will play Wichita, a natural con-woman and tough girl, who with her younger sister, Little Rock (Izabela Vidovic), teams up with Columbus (Tyler Ross) to survive the zombie apocalypse and search for survivors.

Original Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will pen the script for Sony Pictures Television, which is producing the Amazon pilot.

* happy for Maiara in snagging her first major role. It's about time. It'll be hard to top Emma Stone but nonetheless an opportunity to achieve career break-through the 25-years old Maira been looking for.

Review: XL Reveals The Ugly Side Of Icelandic Politics

Here we are, four years after the financial crash and artists are still commenting on the events that led to it. Fueled by stories of greed, political corruption and over abundance, it's easy to find material to tell and hopefully warn other generations that this behavior isn't right, unless you are a sociopathic dick hole.

Director Marteinn Thorsson and actor Olafur Darri Olafsson have found one such dick hole in the form of politician Leifur, who suffers from a severe case of alcoholism and drug addiction. It seems that his behavior will get him ousted from his political party, as he is seen as an embarrassment.

When his close friend the Prime Minister asks Leifur to go to rehab after a public brawl at an art exhibition lands him in jail, he is reluctant to do so, not willing to accept that his life is in shambles. Divorced and living with a girl much younger than him, Leifur indulges in hedonism of the highest order, while still pathetically trying to patch things up with his former wife and estranged daughter.
After a little pep talk with his mother, in which she convinces him to use this to his advantage, Leifur decides to take the journey to sobriety, but not before going out in style, a going away binge to end all binges, a "Black Mass," as one of his friends calls it. And things turn dark as Leifur and his teenage girlfriend embark on a journey of drugs, alcohol, sex, and extortion.
The story is told in a alcohol-drenched haze where we jump back and forth in time and see how Leifur ended up being the sad, pathetic man that he is. He's a self important prick who looks down on the masses but relies on them to have a career.

Marteinn and Olafur pull no punches telling this story, said to be based on real events and people, and show an ugly world full of ugly and desperate people. It's all layered with a clear political message on how we got here; basically, the entire film is a metaphor for years of prosperity we had here in Iceland and how it all came crashing down. But, in the end, did we learn anything, and are the people responsible really repentant? Recent events in politics and business over here says no.

Shot on a micro budget, the filmmakers have managed to pull off a movie that looks incredible, crazed and confusing at times, but tells a coherent story. Marteinn vents his anger in a beautiful visual style, a style that we don't often get over here where a usually static camera is the name of the game. Olafur Darri goes all out, baring his soul, along with other parts of his anatomy, in a part that is a complete reversal of his role as the meek and quiet Gulli in Baltasar Kormakur's The Deep. It's the year of Olafur Darri for sure. Maria Birta (Black's Game) plays his lost teenage girlfriend, who latches on to him in hopes of a better life. Living in a fantasy world where she slowly realizes that she's not much more than a play thing for him, she gives a great and brave performance.

XL is an ugly film, a dirty film, a film that you almost need to take a shower after wallowing in all the filth within. It's not a film for everyone, for sure, but it's above all a good film. Seek it out when possible.

A Man's Man: Ben Lewin on The Sessions

The writer/director reveals the many unusual decisions involved in making the Oscar-nominated drama.

Another thing I was wondering about your planning for is the nudity within the film. It’s very comfortable, it’s very matter of fact, and not unattractive, but one of the things I was interested about was that we never see Mark naked, even when she’s holding up the mirror to him in that one shot. Was that a difficult decision to make.
No.

Where did that come from? Was that a practical concern? A subjective one?
I suppose initial it came from me, in that I had probably made up my mind at an earlier point that I didn’t want to see his d*ck. That I didn’t think it was necessary. I think that it could only have gotten us into trouble. And also, I’ve had to answer this question a number of times, and the truth is full-frontal female nudity and full-frontal male nudity are not the same thing. You can’t just equate them to each other. If you have a male full-frontal, you see the whole works. If you have a female full-frontal you don’t, not unless it’s a kind of a spread-eagle kind of shot, which I wasn’t going to go there either.

Right. Fair enough.
So for me, there were limits of sexual explicitness which were really determined by what the needs of the story were. I wasn’t going to get into a yelling with the censors, with the MPAA, just for a matter of principle. There’s no doubt that if we’d gone into showing erect penises we would have gone into NC-17 territory, and no one would have seen the movie. To what point would that have been?

Rest of the interview is here

Miss March Is First Playboy Centerfold From Connecticut

Connecticut's First Playboy Playmate
Ashley Wilson - known as Ashley Doris in Playboy - is Miss March 2013, and the first Playboy Playmate from Connecticut. These are modeling shots taken between 2009 and 2012 by West Hartford photographer Cheyney Barrieau.

There have been 710 issues of Playboy magazine published since December 1953, each featuring at least one "Playmate of the Month," sometimes two.

Of the hundreds of centerfold models, not one has called Connecticut home, according to a Playboy spokeswoman.

But when the latest issue hits newsstands Friday, residents may recognize Miss March 2013. She's 23-year-old West Hartford native Ashley Wilson.
Wilson – who goes by Ashley Doris in Playboy – is a 2007 graduate of Hall High School and has worked at Lane and Lenge Florists on Park Road since she was 18.

"I rep [my hometown] so hard," Wilson, who is in San Diego, said during a Skype interview on Monday. "I'm a West Hartford girl through and through."
At Hall, Wilson danced in the annual "Pops 'n Jazz" show, which features more than 100 student musicians, dancers and singers. She says she was "an avid reader of romance novels," and a normal teen who might skip class to go to the Bishops Corner Dunkin' Donuts or hang out at Eisenhower Park with friends.

"Ashley's a girls' girl; she always has been," said her mom, Linda Wilson. "She always played dress-up. Even when she could barely walk, she'd put on the most exotic outfits."
Ashley was different from the rest of the family, who work in construction, Ashley's mom said. The Wilsons own West Hartford-based A Dynamic Construction.

"I always knew she would end up doing something with modeling," Linda Wilson said.

In 2009, West Hartford photographer Cheyney Barrieau, a veteran model herself, took test modeling shots of Ashley Wilson for free. Wilson sent the shots out to modeling agencies in Boston and New York, and signed with two Boston agencies.
"From then on, she was working, which was great," Barrieau said.

Barrieau said Wilson has come a long way since that first shoot.
"I'm really excited for her because when I [first] took her picture it was like a deer in the headlights. She didn't know what to do," Barrieau said. "Sure enough, she paid attention, she worked it. The last shoot I did with her was last summer - I didn't have to do anything, she knew it all.

"She blossomed into the model she is now and I hope it continues to take her places," Barrieau said.
Wilson says posing nude for Playboy is vastly different from her usual modeling work.

"I'm not 6 feet tall, so I went with more commercial modeling," she said. Wilson has appeared in ads for Lane and Lenge Florists, Reebok and Adidas, and she plays a pharmacist in an upcoming CVS campaign.

Wilson said she was "definitely apprehensive" about posing nude when she went to the Playboy casting in Las Vegas. She was there in August competing in the Miss Hawaiian Tropic contest. Her roommate for the competition said they should both go to the casting, which was being held near the hotel elevators.

"At first I was like, no, I'm OK," she said. But she went, and then it was Playboy's turn to come calling.

She posed for Playboy.com in September and the photographer referred her to a Playmate casting in November.

Wilson flew out to Los Angeles in December and spent 21 days at the famed Playboy Mansion posing for her centerfold shoot.
Wilson said she didn't tell her "conservative" parents what she was doing until the 19th day.

"I was really surprised," Linda Wilson said. "First, I didn't understand. She goes, 'Mom, I'm a Playmate'."

"I said you're working at a club? I'd forgotten about the word 'Playboy'," Linda Wilson said. "I was flabbergasted."

But once Linda Wilson understood what was going on, she was very proud of her daughter.

"She's living her dream," she said. "To me, it's a major accomplishment for her … Out of 18,000 girls a month that they review, she made it."
Beyond Playboy, Ashley Wilson said she hopes to get into real estate one day. She's currently working to finish her communications degree online through Southern New Hampshire University.

But for now, the bachelorette said she's having fun meeting the other 2013 Playmates, who she says are "surprisingly down-to-earth." She's looking forward to spending this year traveling for event appearances as part of the gig.
She's also excited to come home. In July, she'll appear at the 23rd Annual New England Summer Nationals car show at the Thompson International Speedway.

"It's been surreal," she said. "I feel like I'm going to wake up and they're going to be like, 'I'm so sorry, Ashley, you're such a nice girl, but it's not going to work out'."

'Girls' Star Allison Williams Talks Lena Dunham, Playing Marnie And More

Girls Marnie

Marnie Michaels is arguably the bitchiest, least likable of HBO's four "Girls."

Allison Williams is the face behind the flawed character Lena Dunham created and regardless of how crazy or uncomfortable a scene may be, Williams never turns Dunham down.

"You're not going to say no. She's a genius!" Williams said while chatting with HuffPost TV via phone in honor of her partnership with Simple Skincare. "She always has the final say."

Read on for Williams' feelings about Marnie, working with Dunham, and what it's like to be a woman working in TV.

Do you like Marnie? Would you be friends with her in real life?
I do like Marnie. And I think that's because I work really hard at taking material that's inherently unlikable and trying to add an element of sadness or empathy to her. Even if you're looking at her and thinking, "God, you annoy me so much," you look into her eyes and think she's a little bit lost and a little bit scared and she's just keeping a panic attack at bay. That's something people can relate to, or at least sympathize with.
I think a friendship with her would be a little bit contentious, and I think her attempts to boss me around would probably drive me crazy. But at the same time, if I ever fall off a bike in the middle of nowhere in Brooklyn I would be really happy that she was coming to my rescue.

Marnie hasn't had the best time of it between her job situation, her breakup with Charlie, and this new relationship she's starting with Booth. Do you think she's learning from her mistakes?
I certainly hope she's learning something, but I think she's someone who has a lot of padding in terms of accessing her brain and feelings. I think she's relatively out of touch with herself in terms of what she's passionate about, what she wants in life and who she wants to date. I don't think those are even things that she knows, and I also don't think the idea of soul-searching is all that important to her. But at the same time, I think she's probably on the right track in terms of living a little bit more, having more experiences and trying to figure out what she likes and doesn't like.
The moments I yearn for are the ones where she's being emotionally honest with herself. I don't care if she's talking to someone when she's being honest, I just like knowing that things are hitting her. And thus far, I think she's been relatively protected from herself in terms of having to feel anything. There's a kind of numb quality to her that Audrey recently referred to as a "Stepford Psycho." That quality manifests itself mostly in the fact that she's kind of out of touch with what's wrong.

Is there anything that's been written for your character that you've said no to?
Nope. It's Lena Dunham, you're not going to say no. She's a genius! There were scenes we talked about a lot that didn't end up in the show, or scenes that ended up getting cut. But she always has the final say.

* Now that is obvious BS from Allison. Her refusal to show her tits or even her ass has infuriated Lena to no end. Only thing keeping Lena from losing it is Allison promise to bare it in Season 3.

Now that you've guest starred on "The Mindy Project," you've worked with two of the top female showrunners. Do you feel like Lena and Mindy types will continue to pop up in the years to come?
I hope so. There are a lot of them already. Tina Fey, Whitney Cummings, Liz Meriwether who runs "New Girl" -- just high achieving, really smart women. Last night, I actually saw Arianna Huffington at the screening of "Makers," which is an amazing documentary series about the female empowerment movement over the past 50 years. It's actually sponsored by Simple [Skincare], but I would have been there anyway. It's an incredible series and was a reminder of how far we've come. I think it's easy for our generation to lose sight of the ground that's been laid before us in terms of having equal pay, which still isn't a reality somehow. But seeing Gloria Steinem up there last night was surreal, and a reminder that Lena having this show is nothing to scoff at, it's a really amazing thing. I'm proud to be associated with any of those women.

5 Fun Facts About ‘Girls’ Star Allison Williams

Allison Williams is poised to be a big star.

The Yale-educated, brunette beauty, who happens to be the daughter of NBC newsman Brian Williams, is on fire! Not only is she one of the stars of HBO's buzzy "Girls," but she had a guest role on "The Mindy Project," and recently went to the Grammys as Katy Perry's date.
omg! recently caught up with the 24-year-old actress, who chatted about everything from how much she's like her uptight "Girls" character Marnie to why her skin always looks so darn radiant under the glow of the spotlight.

Check out five fun facts omg! discovered about Williams:

1. Williams is the only member of the "Girls" cast without a tattoo — and she doesn't plan to get inked. Ever.
"At one point, Jemima [Kirke] turned to me and looked me kind of up and down and she was like 'Don't get a tattoo.’ And ever since then, I was like, alright, Jemima said no, so I'm not going to do it,” she tells omg!. “She said it would look weird on me because it just wouldn't match my whole vibe, which I kind of thought was a compliment but I'm also going to take and go, because I'm really kind of a wuss when it comes to pain."

2. Just like the rest of us, she's obsessed with the Duchess of Cambridge.
In 2011, she even wrote and starred in a Funny or Die series called "Will and Kate: Before Happily Ever After." Williams ticks off the reasons she's such a fan: "I like how discreet she is, she's such a lady! I think she's sort of a throwback, like a classic woman."

3. Unlike many of us, the 24-year-old refuses to sleep in her makeup.
"Never. Never, ever, ever," would Williams leave her face paint on overnight. She relies on products from the British brand Simple to keep her skin camera-ready.
"There was time when I did," she admits. "I think in high school and college often I only got about four hours of sleep a night because of homework and extracurricular activities, and I think the idea of taking off my makeup at the end of the day literally seemed like an impossibility, but now I wouldn't dare. I have so little control over everything else, all I can really control skin-wise is what I put on in the morning and what I put on it when I go to bed."

4. She sometimes wants to "shake" Marnie.
"I think generally she's a little bit less lighthearted than I am, a little bit more bossy than I am," Williams notes. "Sometimes I just wanna shake her and tell her to smile or laugh or doing something fun or spontaneous and realize that the world isn't going to end if you do something you haven't planned...."

5. The worst Valentine's Day she ever had was ... not that bad.
This year, Williams has a Valentine in boyfriend Ricky Van Veen, the founder of College Humor and a friend of John Mayer's, which explains that double date at the Grammys. In the past, though, she's spent the most romantic day of the year solo.
So what was the worst?
"Probably one of the many where I was alone," she says with a laugh. "But at the same time, being at home in your sweatpants watching a romantic comedy is not the end of the world."

Allison Williams Wrote an Open Letter to Twitter

Girls star and sudden woman-about-town Allison Williams has penned an open letter to Twitter — published in Marie Claire — explaining why she refuses to join the site. Needing 3,333 characters to describe that decision, we doubt Twitter’s dying to get with her either. Still, the letter, which insistently personifies the social network as an unsatisfactory but well-intentioned male admirer, is totally weird and neurotic and revealing.

Williams writes:
"In some ways, dating you would be good for my career. It's gross, but it's true. It's no surprise that a lot of other actors have gone out with you. Especially for newbies like myself, 'number of followers' is essentially currency. You would provide me with a quantifiable estimation of my popularity. That would help with brands, magazines, and movie studios. Even so, I just don't see the results justifying the risk involved."
By risks, Williams means being divisive, banal, or not as funny as she thought. "The thought that you would misread a joke makes me ill," she frets. Wonder where she got such crazy ideas about Twitter!

* it's going to be a major shocker but mega pleasant news if Katy Perry do appear in Season 3 of Girls. Rumors are she is angling for a role in the series to play Marnie's foil. Or Lena is using Allison to lure in Katy. Either way if you looked at it closely, she will be perfect as a guest-star. Katy is in her twenties and prone to dating weird sleazy douchebags.

Five things you should know about ‘Warm Bodies’ star Analeigh Tipton

Who knew that a romance story between a beautiful young woman and a bloodthirsty zombie with a heart of gold would be such a hit? But “Warm Bodies,” the film about a zombie who falls in love with a human, is the rom-com (or, should we say, rom-com-zom) that's been topping box office charts since the beginning of February. And, as a result, its relatively unknown star Analeigh Tipton is getting shot straight to stardom.
But if you feel like you’ve seen 24-year-old Tipton before, it’s because you probably have. And now that you’re likely to see more of this actress from Sacramento (who has also appeared in “The Green Hornet,” “Crazy Stupid Love,” “Damsels in Distress,” and “Hung”) here are five things you should know about her now.

She almost went pro as a figure skater
Tipton started as a toddler, competed in U.S. championships, and even lived part-time with her coach at one point. "My childhood was spent on the ice and in the mindset of an athlete," she told ESPN last year. "But when I was 16, I woke up one morning and was surprisingly tall for my age."

She was on 'America's Next Top Model'
That height would later come in handy for a stint as a successful model. At 19 years old, Tipton appeared on Cycle 11 of “America’s Next Top Model” in 2008. She even made it just shy of the finals, coming in third overall. That season’s winner was Brittany “Mckee” Sullivan, but Tipton was praised for her on-camera commercial and her success at her “go-sees.” Since, Tipton has worked with Spain’s Marie-Claire, Maxim, Seventeen magazine, Forever 21, and Guess -- but she ultimately moved to L.A. to pursue acting and writing.

She had a brush with human trafficking
Perhaps that was because of a scare Tipton reportedly revealed to Tyra Banks on “ANTM”: Tipton once came across human traffickers posing as modeling agents, leading to a deal that almost sold her to a Saudi Arabian prince. Luckily, she realized the truth and stopped it before it was too late
.

She’s a self-confessed science fiction nerd
Tipton's love of sci fi helped her accept the role in “Warm Bodies.” “I love science fiction so just the fact that I got to be in this kind of genre movie that fits into this kind of world that I love is pretty cool,” she told PopSugar. “And I still have some brushing up on my zombie history to do, but this is a start, I believe.”

She’s a fan of the Canadian hot yoga chain Moksha
In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Tipton revealed that she and “Warm Bodies” costar Teresa Palmer bonded at Moksha classes while filming in Montreal, and will continue to check out the company’s Los Angeles location.

To summarize: Tipton is a smart, beautiful, and level-headed yoga enthusiast, who’s also a nerd and has had three successful careers so far in her relatively short life. Sounds like a rising star to us!

Essex teenager has higher IQ than Einstein

Lauren Marbe, 16, shocked teachers by scoring 161 on the Mensa brain test after she was entered with other pupils from her school for fun.

The "normal" teenager loves fake tanning, blonde highlights, manicures and getting dressed up for parties themed around her favourite reality TV show.

She is the daughter of a black cab driver and dreams of one day being a performer in the West End - like Essex celebrity Denise Van Outen.

But her remarkable brain test score means she is now officially smarter than Professor Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and even Albert Einstein - who all have an IQ of 160.

Miss Marbe has now been enrolled in prestigious society Mensa, which means she is officially in the top one per cent of cleverest people in the world.

The schoolgirl, who is already predicted straight A's and A*'s for her GCSE's, said she was delighted to have "blown away" the Essex stereotype.

Miss Marbe, of Loughton, Essex, said: "It was such an achievement and I got a bit tearful to tell you the truth.”

The teenager, who said her parents were surprised at the result, added: "I am blonde, I do wear make-up and I do go out.

"I love my fake tan and fake nails as well so I guess I am a bit of an Essex girl in that sense. I watch TOWIE and I love the programme, it's addictive but now most people do seem to think that's what everyone in Essex is like.

"I love living in Essex and I'm glad that I might be able to show people that we aren't all ditzy and blonde."

Lauren, a pupil at Roding Valley High School, Loughton, Essex, took the Mensa-accredited IQ test earlier this month along with other high achievers at her school.

The dedicated pupil - head girl of her primary school and currently a prefect - was already considered bright after scoring a double A* in her science GCSE, which she took a year early.

She is now aiming to take A-Levels in art, physics and maths after her GCSEs, this summer, and would love to study architecture degree at the University of Cambridge.

But she admits she is torn between her academic ability and pursuing her dream of becoming a professional singer and dancer.

The prodigal teenager has already performed in the West End for two years as part of the chorus for Andrew Lloyd Webber smash-hit Joseph, with Lee Mead, from 2007.

Lauren, who lives with her family in a £350,000 semi-detached house, still takes dance classes and singing lessons, records music and takes part in Stage One drama school.

Her proud parents, father David, 45, and Sue Marbe, 45, deputy head of a primary school, say they will be happy whichever path their daughter chooses.

The couple also admitted they have no idea where her brains come from.

Mrs Marbe said: "Living in this area there is a lot of pressure to be the stereotypical Essex girl but she has a real nice support from the other girls.

"Most of the time Essex gets a bit of a negative press. People think all girls are blonde and all girls are dim.

"Lauren is blonde but it does seem like she has shaken the stereotype that all Essex girls are stupid.”

Einstein never took an IQ test as none of the modern intelligence tests existed during the course of his life, but experts believe he had an IQ of around 160.

The IQ test is designed to test a range of abilities to determine the level of intelligence of the student - in the UK the average score is 100.

* I bet she will buckle under all that pressure to succeed and could be a fixture at strip clubs across Britain before she turns 20. Asia Carrera anyone?

Girls explains the difference between porn and nudity in half an hour

| February 12, 2013

After all my frustrated and repetitive attempts at trying to explain the difference between porn and images of naked bodies and the difference between objectification and images of female sexuality that aren’t exploitative or sexualized, Sunday night’s episode of Girls basically did it all for me.

Go watch it, if you can, but here’s a super brief recap for those who missed it: Hannah meets a hot doctor dude (Joshua/Patrick Wilson) who comes into the coffee shop she works at to complain about the shop’s garbage ending up in his trash cans. Hannah, being the secret culprit, goes to his place to apologize, kisses him, and they spend the next two days humping. Good times.

The point I’m often trying to make with regard to pornography and pornified images of women is that objectification defines pornography and, in large part, explains why pornographic imagery contributes to the oppression of women. The thing about objectification is that, though we very much like to pretend that it’s somehow ‘natural‘ or unavoidable, it isn’t. It isn’t necessary for women to be objectified onscreen and simply seeing women’s naked bodies or being attracted to a woman doesn’t necessarily mean those women are or must be objectified. It is possible for there to be depictions of sex and sexuality on television and on film and it is possible for female bodies to exist on screen (even naked!) without those images constituting pornography or exploitation.

It isn’t about skin or sex or even voyeurism. It’s about the choices made with regard to context and, essentially, camera angles. The camera is responsible for putting the audience in the position of the objectifier and of forcing us all to see women onscreen through the male gaze. The camera can make different choices. Directors can also make different choices about the kinds of bodies (friendly reminder: all bodies can be objectified, so objectifying less conventional bodies is not radical, per se, BUT putting non-conventional/imperfect bodies onscreen and not making those bodies the butt of a joke is a good thing) that are depicted onscreen and the contexts within which those bodies are depicted.

So while everyone on the internet is busy talking about whether Hannah/Lena Dunham could bag a dude like Joshua/Patrick Wilson in real life, they’re missing the actually interesting and revolutionary (yes, I realize I may be a little overexcited about a whitey TV show about rich kids in NYC, but let me have this one, please?) aspect of the show, which is NAKED FEMALE BODIES THAT AREN’T PORNIFIED. It’s possible and it happened.

Yes, dudes are choked because WTF is up with women on screen that aren’t just masturbatory material and actually look like normal, real, people, but this, of course, is a sign that Dunham is doing something right. You want proof? David Haglund and Daniel Engber thought it was the worst episode ever. I, on the other hand, thought it was the best episode ever and felt swoony inside my cold, black heart after watching.

I’m pretty positive that the way to be absolutely sure that we’re doing something right as women is if a bunch of Internet dudes are pissed off about it.

5 Things You Need to Know About Unofficial SXSW Showcases

This is the time of year where many artists many artists are starting to get their SXSW rejection letters. It’s also the time of year where you’ll see many contests on SonicbidsReverbNation, and other sites that try to have you have your fans vote your way into a slot at the festival. However, eager artists who want to break into the music industry will begin finding other ways to a part of the action and that includes unofficial SXSW showcases or other festivals taking place in Austin at the same time. Before you jump at any of these opportunities, you better educate yourself.

The 5 Things You Need to About Unofficial SXSW Showcases

  1. They will not give you “industry” respect: If you’re heading to SXSW to try and get some music industry credentials but don’t you’re not on the SXSW roster, make you understand that you will not be seen as a SXSW act. There are many shows happening during SXSW week but almost all of them are “pay to play” events and for better or worse, you’ll be viewed as a “buy on” act.
  2. Most “other” festivals will charge you $100-$1,500 for the show: Prices to play other festivals start at $100 for a 30 minute set playing and less than an adequate backline setup. The better the location or time slot, the more expensive the show. You’ll only get a quick line check and if you take a long time, it will cut into your set.
  3. But They’re Usually Free to the Public: Unlike SXSW shows, the nice thing about the unofficial parties is that a SXSW wristband isn’t required to get in. However, it doesn’t mean that people will walk in. You’ll still have to promote your set if you want someone to show up.
  4. There’s no Parking: If you’re not playing SXSW, you won’t get a temporary parking permit so you can park/unload gear. Just a heads up: parking in downtown Austin during the week of the festival is a nightmare. You’ll either have to pile into taxi’s, walk, or have someone else drop you off and park a bit away.
  5. Playing These Festivals Will Not Get You SXSW Access: You will not be allowed into SXSW’s shows nor the industry panels at the convention center unless you buy a badge.
I’ve written about this before in How to Book SXSW and Is It Worth It? but I think it’s important for bands to have a plan before they jump at the offers thrown at them for SXSW. Start by thinking about:

What is your goal? If it’s to build an audience in Austin, you might be better off touring there when there isn’t so much competition and  it doesn’t cost you money to play there. If you want to get on the radar of people at SXSW, playing secondary festivals won’t get you there.

What is the Opportunity Cost? Could you be spending your time/money in other ways that would bring a better return on investment for your band? For example, a well-promoted tour with shows. You can still make industry connections and set up appointments while you’re on the road (and while those people are not being bombarded with meeting requests/party invites like they would at SXSW).

How Will You Benefit in the Long Run? I’ve seen many, many empty venues at SXSW (both official showcases as well as some of the concurrent festivals) and I have to wonder if it was worth it for those acts. Touring isn’t cheap and with nearly every hotel in the city charging premium rates, it is definitely the most expensive time to be in Austin.

Can You Do It Better? With the rates some of these festivals are charging, you could very well rent out your own venue and split the costs with other bands, promoting your own show. Many SXSW acts look for other parties/shows to play so you can probably get some well-known touring acts to headline the show too. You might also be able to offset costs with sponsors/promoters. Get creative!
Not all of these festivals/shows are a scam (though some genuinely are). Some of these shows are actually a lot of fun and you can make some new friends. However, don’t get your hopes up thinking that you’ll be able to buy your way to success by playing any of them.

Vanessa Kirby : Breakthrough Stars of 2013

Vanessa KirbyOver the last few weeks we have been looking at the actors and actresses that would well make a big acting breakthrough this year... and Vanessa Kirby is one of them.

The actress has already started to make a name for herself in television and theatre but 2013 sees the big screen call - and she has a couple of very exciting projects ahead of her.

Kirby decided not to go LAMDA and instead decided to join an agency and began forging her acting career.

It proved to be a wise move as she began landing theatre roles including All My Sons and A Midsummer Night's Dream - where she caught people's eye.

She went on to star in Women Beware Women at the National Theatre - which saw her work with director Marianne Elliott - before going on to star in As You Like It.

By 2011 she has spread her wings and moved into TV projects as she took on the role of Ruth Elms in a couple of episodes of The Hour as well as making her big screen debut in Love/Loss.

The biggest role of her TV career came in 2011 as she played Estella in a TV adaptation of Great Expectations.

The BBC series was directed by Brian Kirk and saw Kirby team up with Ray Winstone and Gillian Anderson in what was a successful show.

But it is 2013 where we are going to see much more of the actress as she juggles TV and film projects.

First of all she is set to take on the major role of Alice Tanner in the adaptation of Labyrinth.

The TV miniseries is based on the novel of the same name by Kate Moss and will be airing this year.

The story jumps between modern and medieval France and follows two woman's hunt for the Holy Grail.

Kirby is joined on the cast list by Tom Felton, Jessica Brown Findlay and John Hurt.

She is also set to appear in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman - the latest film from Shia Labeouf.

The movie marks the big screen directorial debut of Fredrik Bond while Evan Rachel Wood and Mad Miikkelsen are also on the cast list.

She has also completed work on About Time - the film from Richard Curtis starring Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson.

Kirby has enjoyed success already in her career but 2013 is set to be a very big year for her.

* I can lament the lack of nudity on British television at the moment but never once I'll fault the female performers for taking their top off when it matters most or when the time is right (except for that Titwell chick). The nudity ratio is pretty good with the British actresses. It's hard to pinpoint a nudity dodger considering many of them are calculative enough to realize there is time and place for everything. Gorgeous stage thespian Vanessa belongs to that group. The 23-years old English rose is a patient player with a wise head on her young shoulders and pert breasts. She wants to exhaust all her options on the stage before venturing fully into movies. From an interview she gave to the press a year ago:
Already, she's been to LA and has an American agent – but is hesitant about Hollywood. "I remember someone saying, 'Go in there and tell them your five-year plan.' And I remember thinking, 'No!' I know what quality of work I want to do, and I know what type of people I'd love to work with. But if you set yourself up... I hate the idea of massive fame. I think the scariest thing for an actor is when your name becomes bigger than your craft or what you can do. Rosamund Pike and Hayley Atwell are actresses who have done it totally the right way round for me. They've got such a solid base of amazing work."
Hollywood awaits Vanessa and her future nude scenes are going to be epic.
Unlike Hayley Big Titties (that’s her Native Indian name). As elusive as Loch Ness monster. Does it really exist? Will we ever catch a glimpse? Or will it always remain a mystery hidden deep from human eyes. I'm talking of course, about Hayley nipples.
