American Mary
A review by Kim Newman

Dirs: Jen and Sylvia Soska. US-Canada. 2012. 100mins

A vast step forward from the Soska twins’ 2009 feature debut Dead Hooker In A Trunk, this retains the energy and perversity of that shaggy dog story but with far more tact, control and intelligence. Built around a showcase performance from Katharine Isabelle (who impressed a decade ago in Ginger Snaps), American Mary is an entry in the horror-of-plastic surgery sub-genre of Georges Franju’s Eyes Without A Face and Jesus Franco’s The Awful Dr Orloff, rooted in the recent, real, fascinating phenomenon of body modification.

When a poseur says he’s thinking about getting ‘tribal scarring and some piercings’, he’s thrown out of Dr Mary’s waiting room. This is a world of more extreme, stylised and singular voluntary mutations, which start with tongue bisections and cosmetic amputations and work up to whole body make-overs at once beautiful and grotesque.

Mary Mason (Isabelle), a financially-struggling surgical intern who practices sutures at home on uncooked chickens, goes for a job interview with Billy Barker (Antonio Cupo), a lowlife club-owner looking to hire a masseuse. A sudden crisis prompts Billy to pay Mary some fast cash for off-the-books surgery performed on a business associate injured during a harsh interrogation.

This leads to Mary’s apartment being invaded by Beatress (Tristan Risk, in a bizarre but remarkable performance), an exotic dancer in the club who has had herself altered to look like Betty Boop. She asks Mary to consider helping Ruby RealGirl (Paula Lindberg), who has been turned down by other surgeons and wants to extend her doll-look to the crotch area.

Though unsure, Mary goes ahead with the procedure. In a sub-plot which is cannily integrated with the heroine’s journey, Mary’s trust in a lecturer (David Lovgren) is hideously abused, prompting her to drop out of school and continue lucrative work as a body modifier alongside a career as a surgical torturer/vigilante which takes her into psychological states as extreme as the physical ones desired by her more willing customers.

Jen and Sylvia Soska, who cameo as peculiar matched degenerates, who have previously worked in a retro grindhouse style, adopt an icier, more detached manner. Though full of shocking concepts and sights, American Mary is restrained in what it shows, confident that the horrors it implies will sink in. Isabelle, in fetishist black surgeon’s gloves, is a striking presence, conveying Mary’s growing insanity with a slit smile and scary presence.

One of the strongest moments in the film comes from the protagonist’s realisation that the tough crooks who hang about Billy’s club are terrified of her, though a hulking bouncer (Twan Holliday) has one great speech about a personal experience which makes him wish he’d known her earlier. A film with enigmas (why is it important that Mary be American?), unconventional character developments (Cupo and Lovgren both have interesting roles which take unexpected turns) and genuinely fresh material, this needs careful positioning between cult horror and arthouse transgression but ought to become a late-night staple.

Already the Soska Twins are the most interesting sibling movie collaborators since the Coen Brothers; this will serve to attract major interest in future projects. If this were a more conventional indie drama, it would also boost Isabelle’s prospects the way Winter’s Bone and Martha Marcy Mae Marlene boosted Jennifer Lawrence and Elizabeth Olson; even in its twilight zone, it should get her away from gigs like being a one-scene victim in a direct-to-DVD 30 Days of Night sequel.

Auditioning for female roles in upcoming Starz "Black Sails"
Transformers director Michael Bay is set to drop anchor as executive producer on the new Starz pirate adventure drama, tentatively titled Black Sails. Created by Jon Steinberg (Jericho, Human Target) and Robert Levine (Touch), the straight-to-series order will consist of an eight episode first season, which is expected to launch in 2014.
Set up as a twenty-year prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic book Treasure Island, Black Sails will follow the adventures of cutthroat corsair Captain Flint and his crew of brutal buccaneers, whose plundering ways have led them to the brink of extinction. Flint’s fight for survival forces him to seek sanctuary on the debauched pirate paradise New Providence Island, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and stunning brutality. On the journey, Flint will take on a young, fast-talking addition to his crew— one, John Silver.
Jericho and Human Target creator Jon Steinberg created the drama and will serve as showrunner. Bay will exec produce alongside his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (2009's A Nightmare on Elm Street). Touch's Robert Levine will co-exec produce.

Supposed to start filming in and around Cape Town (studios), Africa late this year or start of next year. Hiring mostly Irish/Aussie actors (and we all know why...wink wink).

Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen and More Will Romp In Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'; Shooting Starts This Week

by Kevin Jagernauth
While Lars Von Trier is no stranger to attracting Hollywood types to his movies, particularly with his films "Dogville" and "Manderlay," you might think his upcoming, sex-driven "The Nymphomaniac" might be the kind of project agents keep away from their talent. Guess again. Shia LaBeouf signed on earlier this month to the film being led by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard, with Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe both rumored, and while the latter pair are yet to be confirmed, Von Trier's next endeavor has just added a batch of talent, including two more prominent names.

Tintin and Billy Elliot himself Jamie Bell, as well as Connie Nielsen ("Boss," "One Hour Photo," Mrs. Calloway in "Rushmore") have joined the film alongside frequent collaborator Jens Albinus ("Antichrist," "Dogville," "Dancer In The Dark," "The Idiots," "The Boss Of It All"), Shanti Roney, Severin von Hoensbroech, Nicolas Bro and Jesper Christensen. What roles everyone will be playing is being kept under wraps, but as we already know, the two-part film will feature explicit hardcore sex (there will also be a softcore version) with LaBeouf revealing that a disclaimer regarding those scenes arrived with the script. However, producers have said body doubles and visual effects will also be used, which jibes with what Gainsbourg said back in February. To recap, here's the official synopsis:

NYMPHOMANIAC is the light and poetic story of a woman's erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-‐diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe.
On a cold winter's evening Seligman, an old bachelor, finds Joe semi‐unconscious and beaten up in an alleyway. After bringing her to his flat he sees to her wounds while trying to understand how things could have gone so wrong for her. He listens intently as she over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-‐out and multi faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.

No release date for this one yet, but producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen said earlier this year the he's aiming for a Cannes premiere in 2013. It's a bold move considering Von Trier has became persona non grata on the Crositte in 2011 following his comments at the "Melancholia" press conference. And while the helmer himself may not show up -- in the fall he announced he would no longer do press or interviews -- we'd reckon Thierry Fremaux will find this one hard to resist if he can snag the world premiere.

Production on "The Nymphomaniac" kicks off on Tuesday.

'Nymphomaniac' sex scenes to use 'body doubles and visual effects'

Lars Von Trier's upcoming Nymphomaniac will use special effects to simulate sex, the film's producers have reportedly clarified .
Shia LaBeouf had previously previous suggested in an interview that all of the sex featured in the film would be "real".

Shia LaBeouf "Lawless' film premiere, Los Angeles Lars Von Trier

According to The Hollywood Reporter, producers are now saying that the sex in the film will be performed "with the help of body doubles and visual effects".

Nymphomaniac stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, who recounts the tale of her erotic life to a Good Samaritan.

The film is to be released in two parts in 2013, with both 'hardcore' and 'softcore' versions.

Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, Tintin) was also announced to have joined the cast, and will star alongside Gainsbourg, LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgard, Nicolas Bro, and Jesper Christensen.

Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe have also claimed in interviews to have taken part in the project, but producers have currently been unable to confirm their involvement in the finished film.

Who's That Girl?

She got her showbiz start playing character roles at New Canaan Country School. Now, Allison Williams is all grown up and drawing critical praise for her wry and riveting performance on the Emmy-nominated TV series, Girls.
Beth Cooney Fitzpatrick
It’s amazing what you can find on YouTube these days, including the perfect girl to cast in your hit television series. The video-sharing site is where Hollywood producer Judd Apatow first spied New Canaan native Allison Williams flirtatiously crooning the lyrics to Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy.” Two years ago, Williams set Cole’s jazz standard to the tune of the Mad Men theme song and performed it while pretending she was making eyes at Don Draper. Apatow immediately dialed up the aspiring actress’s agent and said, “Make sure she auditions.” And that’s how this beguiling twenty-four-year-old, who got her showbiz start playing character roles at New Canaan Country School, became Hollywood’s new It girl. For Allison is now part of the talented quartet of actresses starring in HBO’s Girls. One of the years’s most discussed new shows, it’s a hilarious, smart and sexually provocative look at the lives of four semi-unhinged twenty-something Brooklyn girls. It also received an Emmy nomination for best comedy series.

The series recently began filming its second season in New York City, where I rendezvous with Williams for some dedicated Girls talk. She waves me over from the entrance of a chic hotel library with a mega-watt smile, introducing herself with an easy familiarity that suggests she’s not affected by her new role as rising star. Here, where people are obliviously tapping away at their laptops, Williams is just a clean-scrubbed, anonymously pretty girl in Bermuda shorts, a slouchy white T-shirt and canvas espadrilles, a girl who can still slip on her Chapstick under the celebrity radar. For now…

Despite her intriguing pedigree—she’s the oldest child of Brian Williams, the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, and his wife, Jane Stoddard Williams—this actress has lived a remarkably private life. But now she’s eager to talk about her beloved hometown and how she became that girl.
Allison Williams now makes her home in Manhattan, but New Canaan is close to her heart. She shared some of her favorite places and things in town.
New Canaan Country School: “It was a profoundly stimulating and nurturing intellectual environment, incredibly diverse and just special. Most of the guests I invited to the Girls premiere were my [NCCS] friends.” And because some of her first stage performances were there, “the auditorium there feels very special to me.”
The Farmer’s Market: “I worked in a bread and pesto stand there during middle and part of high school, and I am still obsessed with a sandwich we sold: pesto mozzarella on sesame semolina bread.”
The New Canaan Library: “I love books and libraries, but especially the New Canaan Library.” A favorite place is a reading room where she used to go for storytime as a child. Her parents have a video Allison, filmed when she was in kindergarten, impersonating the librarians reading to the children.
Waveny Park: “It’s a great place to just be outdoors, but really, I appreciate everything about Waveny. I always loved the Wednesday summer concert series.”
The New Canaan Nature Center: “I spent most of my childhood sloshing around outdoors in my duck books looking at worms and I have wonderful memories of time spent there. Everything they do, from their pre-school programs to their nature camps, is special.”
After Apatow—who produced box-office hits like Bridesmaids and The 40-Year-Old Virgin—happened upon Williams’ mesmerizing YouTube performance, her Girls audition invite arrived, and at exactly the right time. She had just satisfied her part of a smart bargain with her parents: Get an education and then try acting. After graduating from Greenwich Academy, Williams hit the books at Yale rather than study scripts in Hollywood. “School wasn’t something I could opt out of and even though I wanted to do exactly the opposite, now I’m grateful that my parents insisted,” she says. While studying English, Williams performed in Yale’s improv comedy troupe and developed her ambitious habit of posting experimental performance videos—including one in which she plays a potty-mouthed premarital Kate Middleton—just to “try things like comedy out.”

After Yale, Williams moved to Santa Monica and tutored disadvantaged high school students (a job she loved) while bracing herself for Hollywood’s rejection. “I was ready to do anything; the tiniest part I could get,” she says. “But I didn’t feel like it was going to be easy.” Soon, Williams’ clean and polished coyness, which Apatow described as the right “vibe,” landed her improvisational audition scenes opposite Lena Dunham, the wunderkind creator, producer and star of Girls. Dunham immediately had Williams in mind for the part of uptight Marnie Michaels from Montclair, New Jersey. “It was a challenging role to cast and the moment Allison appeared, it made sense,” says Dunham. “Her mix of glamour and humor, kindness and type-A toughness was unparalled. I was impressed by her wit and her ability to just roll with it. And her vocabulary!”

Williams has garnered critical praise and considerable attention for her wry and riveting take on Marnie, the tightly wound but charmed girl who seemingly has it all, from the cute (ex) boyfriend and hip art gallery job to parents who still pay half her Blackberry bill. “It’s like everything in her life has been checked off in neat little boxes,” says Williams. “She’s someone who’s very good at giving her friends advice about how to do the right thing, but too insecure to live her own life that way.”

David Fincher Says He's Still Figuring Out 'Dragon Tattoo' Sequel; Reveals Other Directors On 'House Of Cards'
by Kevin Jagernauth

With Sony confirming last week that "The Girl Who Played With Fire" would not be hitting screens in 2013 (hardly a shock considering no casting or greenlight or any other movement had happened on "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" followup), speculation brewed as to whether or not David Fincher would return. While "The Social Network" was pretty much smooth sailing, his relationship with Sony grew fractious during 'Dragon Tattoo,' with heads butting from the start over casting and more bumps along the way. "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" was expected to be his next film, but we'd wager Disney might be re-considering the expensive 3D and CGI-heavy movie in the wake of the belly flop "John Carter," and particularly with "The Lone Ranger" reportedly already going over budget. Whatever might be going on behind the scenes, it seems Fincher still has Lisbeth Salander on the brain.

The folks over at The Art Of Title recently chatted with Fincher about his credit sequences, in what is an excellent and fascinating read. But for our purposes we're going to zone in right to the end of the piece, where Fincher provides an update of what is currently on his plate. There is the Netflix and Media Rights Capital series "House Of Cards" which is he executive producing and directing (we'll get to that in a moment), and oh hey, it looks like 'Played With Fire' is in the mix too. "Well, [I'm] trying to figure out a sequel to 'Dragon Tattoo.' We’ve got to be able to make it our own thing," he said.

We're not going to over analyze things here except to say that it appears his hat is still very much in the ring. It always seemed a bit odd that Fincher would walk away from a franchise he helped establish, leaving it in the hands of someone else (not to mention that his deal with Sony would require the studio to pay him out if he exited, something they're likely not eager to do) and he's been very protective of Rooney Mara when it comes to this film, fighting for her from day one to get the role. Last week, it was reported that Steve Zaillian was still working on the script, and perhaps that's a hint that development is continuing with Fincher involved. It should also be noted, that Fincher dropped out of "Cleopatra" starring Angelina Jolie and produced by 'Dragon Tattoo' producer Scott Rudin. Could it be because 'Played With Fire' has moved up to the front burner? But we'll see how this all plays out.

Meanwhile, Fincher is busy on "House Of Cards." Word has been very quiet about the new show, aside from talk about a behind-the-scenes-battle over budget early in the year and a first look image this spring. But things are rolling along, and Fincher has revealed who else is lending their talent to the episodes being filmed. "I shot the first two episodes, and we’re sound mixing in the next couple of weeks and then finishing. James Foley has directed two and Joel Schumacher directed two, and now Charles McDougall has directed two. It’s up and running so that’s a fulltime job," he said.

It's an interesting mix of names. Schumacher has mostly been cranking out dreck for the past decade, but perhaps this is a chance to redeem himself. Foley is best known as the helmer behind the screen version of David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross" while McDougall is a TV vet who has worked on "Sex And The City," "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation." None of these guys are particularly auteurs, which may mean they're the perfect sort of directors to come in and work with the vision Fincher is putting together for the show. And oh, in case you're wondering, Fincher does confirm that designer Neil Kellerhouse is working on this project as well.

The 13 episode first season of "House Of Cards" is due to air on Netflix in 2013. Could 'Played With Fire' be next on Fincher's deck after that? It seems that you can't count it out just yet. And do head over to The Art Of The Title for the Fincher interview -- it's a great piece.

*~Most Controversial Sex Scenes of All Time~*

There is a long history of notorious sex scenes on film with discomforting effects for the viewer. Sometimes they are transgressive; other times they are satiric. Sometimes they seem to exist simply to aim for maximum depravity. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of such scenes varying that can get under your skin. These picks have the power to make you squirm in your seat and incite debates.

Pink Flamingos!

Anyone who has seen John Waters' transgressive exploitation comedy 'Pink Flamingos' has likely never forgotten it. It has been a cult classic ever since its release in 1972, and much of its draw is due to the constant perversion and moments depraved enough to make you squirm throughout the entirety of the film. When relegating the raunchiness to scenes involving sex, two scenes tie for the most cringe-inducing : The scene where a couple has sex with alive chicken sandwiched between them and the scene where Mom gives son a blowjob after they both get hot and bothered from licking every piece of furniture in sight.

Antichrist!

Lars Von Trier's 'Antichrist' divided audiences thanks to the graphic nature of a few scenes. The genital mutilation was what sent many people over the edge. The prologue that opens the film in black-and-white was enough to get people more than simply cringing though. It's rendered artistically, but nevertheless the film opens graphically with an intense sex scene between Willem Defoe and Charlotte Gainsbourgh with frank portrayals of his penis hitting her vagina and climaxes with the death of their young son as he falls from a window.

Teeth!

'Teeth' is a lesser-known horror fable of a teenage girl possessing vaginal dentata. For those of you never before versed in vaginal dentata, it's the myth of a vagina with teeth. Yes, she has sex several times during the film, and you may be able to guess what happens every time she does. That goes for a doctor's fingers too.

Crash!

David Cronenberg's 1996 film 'Crash' revolves around characters who get turned on and have a fetish for sex and car crashes. If that plot alone doesn't make you uncomfortable, dialogue such as in a scene where James Spader and Deborah Kara Unger get it on may do the trick. Trying to get an adulterous rise out of Spader's character during theact, Unger's wife asks her husband : "Do you know what semen tastes like" before describing the taste in detail to him.

Requiem for a Dream

'Requiem for a Dream' is Darren Aronofsky's brilliant study of addiction, its excesses and emptiness. It has cringe-inducing sex too. The film's symphonic climax includes a vacant Jennifer Connelly going ass-to-ass in a hotel room at a rock-bottom point in her life. The squirm factor gets amplified thanks to ingenious editing for maximum impact as the film cuts between Connelly's beaten face, an amputated arm and Ellen Burstyn's pill-popping, madness-ridden face.

Bruno!

Sacha Baron Cohen 's 'Bruno' is an outlandish satirical docu-comedy about a gay Austrian television host who attacks almost every societal sexual boundary throughout the film's entirety. No scene gained more notoriety, especially with the MPAA, than his sexual escapades with Diesel, his pygmylover. The scene involves Diesel riding an exercise bike that rams a giant phallus into Bruno, Bruno pouring a glass of champagne with the thick end of the bottle stuffed in Diesel's anus and slingshoting Diesel in a chair with his assopen so it slams into Bruno's penis.

Scary Movie!

'Scary Movie' brings the raunchiness by giving us Anna Faris' yard-high bush of pubic hair and a geyser of female ejaculate that launches a guy up to the ceiling.

Fight Club

Tyler Durden and Marla Maples have plenty of sex in ' Fight Club, ' but it's the dialogue and the rubber glove that was induce cringing. The line she says after post-coital "I haven't been fu*ked like that since grade school" leaves quite the impact. Curiously enough that bit of dialogue was a replacement line demanded by the studio. The original line in the script was "I wanna have your abortion".

Team America: World Police

Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided to show the MPAA the error of their ways for a hilarious sex scene in 'Team America: World Police.' Since the guys were making a movie with puppets and not actors, they decided to go for big laughs having their puppet stars do the nasty with athletic prowess in almost every position imaginable.

Japanese Charity Breast-Squeeze!

A charity breast squeeze took place last weekend in Shinjuku, Tokyo as part of the “Erotica will Save the World” event.

Is this a typical reward for donating to charity in Japan? We go hands on… I mean… just read on for more details.

“Erotica will Save the World” is a 24-hour live-streamed fundraising event that took place last Saturday and Sunday (August 25-26). Men and women (yes, that is right) came out to enjoy two days of erotically-charged festivities: Some of the areas had stalls selling goods and DVDs, other areas had fun events such as a “Masturbation Marathon.” We’ll leave the details of that that competition up to your imagination.

The most popular attraction was the “Breast Fundraiser”, which encouraged people to donate to charity. How did it encourage them to do that? Well, if you donate some money you are allowed to squeeze the breasts of one of ten lovely adult video actresses (known as oppai momi in Japanese – yes, they have a phrase for it).
The 10 volunteers
Here is a quick rundown of the “Breast Fundraiser”:
1. Line up, have your ID checked (must be over 18)
2. Donate money
3. Sterilize your hands (they don’t know where they have been)
4. Squeeze breasts (up to two squeezes per hand)

The organizers have recommended that if the allocated squeeze is not enough for you, to go through processes 1 to 4 again.
Showing how it is done…
Here is a Youtube promotion of the event, introducing some of the volunteers. (No nudity)

All money raised will be donated to STOP!AIDS, a charity aimed at promoting the awareness, treatment, and prevention of AIDS. Oppai momi is particularly popular in Japan, and there are plenty of Japanese style pubs where you can go have a beer and also a squeeze of the waitresses breasts after a hard day in the office.
This is the first oppia momi fundraiser we are aware of though.
