Many British actors all long for the chance to play James Bond, but while Daniel Craig still has a licence to kill, Dominic Cooper has the next best thing.

The Captain America star will appear in Sky Atlantic's new miniseries Fleming, in which he plays the author of the most famous spy novel franchise in the world.

Speaking of his role as the British writer, Dominic told the Daily Star: Stepping into the shoes of the man who not only created 007, but who fantasised about being him, has to be every actor’s dream.'

The four-parter details the life of Ian Fleming from his career during Naval Intelligence up to the point he wrote Casino Royale in 1952, when James Bond first breathed life.

But it also concerns the chaotic relationship between the writer and his eventual wife Ann Charteris, who shared a long love affair with each other and many others before their marriage.

In the first still from the new series,Dominic Cooper and Lara Pulver show their on-screen chemistry as Ian and Ann as they fell in love during World War II.

Speaking of the love scenes, Lara - who famously went nude for her role as Irene Adler - Lara said: 'What was wonderful with Dominic is we trusted each other in the most vulnerable moments and most aggressive.'

'Ann challenged Ian more than any other woman could. They connected on a deep, tragic level. It’s about their animalistic behaviour. It’s not just about the sex though, it’s about the psychology, the game.'

Lara admitted that while some of the scenes may be considered explicit, she felt comfortable shooting them with Dominic.

The couple remained married until Ian's death of a heart attack in 1961, despite having numerous affairs with other people.

The mini-series is believed to draw on the couple's sexually explicit letters to each other, in which they discussed their obsession with kinky behaviour such as flagellation.

The TV series will also explore Ian’s complex relationship with his mother Evelyn St Croix Rose - who once forced him to break off an engagement because she disliked his fiancée - and with other women in his life.
